Oliver is a CSE Prof teaching databases and data structures. He enjoys HEMA, cooking, photography, home automation, and coding random stuff. He built a notebook for collaborative, reproducible data science called Vizier (https://vizierdb.info) and now works on scaling datalog on commodity hardware (https://git.odin.cse.buffalo.edu/Norn/Draupnir)

Expect posts here to be mostly about #draupnir, #vizier, bad puns, #photo graphy, and/or travel logs.

The second annual UB Databases Alum SF meetup. Was really great to catch up with Abhineet, Andrew, Gourab, @amazing_ying@mastodon.social, Varsha, and Darshana. Darshana fled from nearby Toronto, so I had to chase her down to bestow her graduation present upon her. (2nd year in a row that this event has born witness to such a bestowal... Ying got hers just last year)

Victory!

An operator in #Draupnir with unexpectedly quadratic behavior is now down to loglinear... as Knuth intended.

10min on a beefy desktop -> under 2 min on a substantially less beefy laptop.

I knew this crude versioning extension for BTrees was going to have O(N) seek time, but expected the common case to be closer to the usual O(log N). This particular scenario ended up triggering the worst case behavior nearly every time.

Silly me.

Props to #Cornell for taking a stand against internet purge laws. A Cornell alum event was just handing out these age gate bypass tools.

@rntz@recurse.social Does that change the WCOJ tradeoffs at all? You can probably get something tighter than AGM if you know some joins are FK, but this is just because the referencing relation provides a cardinality bound for the join ouput. I'm not familiar with anything specific...but then I haven't been keeping up with WCOJ lately. Otoh, I also wouldn't be surprised if I found out that the Theory folks didn't see it as an interesting space...

@Ameboid@mastodon.social There's a take from @oatmeal@mastodon.social that captures this idea beautifully [1]. Art, scientific pubs, etc... are all forms of communication, all attempts to connect people across time and space. The process of craftsmanship is useful because it naturally selects for works that have something valuable to contribute to the conversation. GenAI makes it possible for someone to create an artifact has the trappings of meaning, but without a process that forces the person to actually think through what they actually have to contribute. It's a hot take, or as The Oatmeal puts it: "As a kid, I had one of those little Casio keyboards where you could hit a button and it'd automatically play a song. I remember hitting the button. I remember standing there pretending to make music. That's how I see AI art. Standing there. Pretending." The full take is far more nuanced, and the medium conveys the emotion far better than a text excerpt. It's worth a read. [1] https://theoatmeal.com/comics/ai_art

@liamoc @jfdm @gallais I'm doing something along these lines, using in person discussions to validate student understanding of their code. Specifically, I ask students to journal their debug process: Each symptom they encounter, the steps they took to diagnose it, and the final resolution. I definitely suspect some GenAI use, but even if I can't attribute it directly, lack of understanding still leads to a worse grade. That said, in person validation is absolutely not scalable, and only possible because this is the smaller off semester for the class.

For anyone in #WesternNewYork (#WNY), and specifically the #Buffalo/#Niagara area, #UBuffalo will hold its bi-annual UB CSE Demo Day in Davis Hall on May 5th at 2:00

https://ub-cse-demo-day.github.io/

This is one of the big highlights of the semester, and always features a lot of really neat student efforts. If you're in the area, check it out.

Is there a rust package of building blocks for database engines?

I'm thinking buffer manager, file io, page layout structures, primitive-valued expression evaluation, and maybe even some toy B+/LSM implementations. Sort of like BerkeleyDB, but with expressions and designed for easy extension... but no actual DB logic.

@kop316 Nice! My OP6 has PMOS on it. I haven't touched it in a while, but I haven't really had stable call audio there either (~50/50 chance that one side of the call couldn't hear the other). When I last tried to daily drive it, I wasn't able to get VoLTE working, so I thought the audio issues might be something SIP-related.

Replying to
@ethersync Sorry for the ambiguous post! To clarify, the docs suggest that the Ethersync editor protocol is closely related to LSP. I understand that this is only at the level of parsing protocol messages, but the two protocols themselves seem fairly close in terms of capabilities. Ethersync seems to need the ability to modify the content of an editor buffer, and to observe changes, both of which seem (at first glance) to be supported by the language server protocol. It got me thinking about whether it would be possible to implement a protocol bridge. That is, would it be possible to expose the Ethersync server as a language server? Given how widely LSP is supported, this would open up support in a significantly larger number of editors. I haven't had much time to look at the idea yet, and my entire knowledge of LSP comes from a 5 minute skim, so I'd be curious whether this is something you'd already tried and whether the effort is/is not likely to succeed.

@jfdm @liamoc @gallais Yeah. Take-home work is all suspect at this point. Something I'll probably try next time I teach a larger project-based class is stochastic code reviews (I semi-randomly pick which subset of the class to interview for each project).
