We have developed a new interactive R notebook that demonstrates how you can monitor your institution’s publication output using OpenAlex. It compares different search strategies and accounts for institutional hierarchies, for example "parent / child" relationships between institutions. 👉 Affiliation search using ROR IDs: https://oa-datenpraxis.de/ROR.html No software installation or prior programming knowledge required. #openaccess #rstats @IBI_HU@openbiblio.social

Do publishers deliver the metadata they promise in transformative agreements?

Our colleague Sophia Dörner @subugoe@openbiblio.social analyzed @crossref@mastodon.online metadata for journal articles covered by transformative agreements with German research institutions:

The analysis shows that metadata completeness varies across publishers, and contractual provisions don't lead to higher coverage. There are substantial gaps, for example with regards to affiliation and funding information.

Open Access Licences and Open Metadata in Transformative Agreements – Scholarly Communication Analytics

I analyse Crossref metadata for around 250,000 journal articles published between 2019 and 2025. The analysis reveals that contractual language alone is insufficient to ensure implementation: coverage of specific metadata elements varied considerably across publishers and agreements, and explicit provisions do not consistently translate into higher coverage. A notable near-absence of ROR ID coverage across most agreements highlights gaps that undermine institutional attribution in research asses

The authors of this report, @cameronneylon@hcommons.social and @MsPhelps@akademienl.social , use open datasets to model future publishing costs at the consortial level:

"It is our belief that there is substantial value in making this financial data more public and transparent, as it can support comparison, discussion and critique. [Where] data is shared it helps us to build a picture of global investments and plan as a community for the future." (p. 40)

Trajectory modelling of publishing costs using Open Research Information - An open source analytics pipeline

Through a project initially supported by IReL and building from previous work undertaken by the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative and Invest in Open Infrastructure, we have built a system for examining the costs of potential future scenarios, based on cost parameters calculated from available data. In this analysis we use the example of the Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL, the Australia-Aotearoa New Zealand library consortium) and Bibsam (the Swedish library consortium) to dem

This blog post discusses recent events that reveal fragilities of the open research information ecosystem:

https://www.digital-science.com/blog/2026/02/no-shortcuts-to-research-information-citizenship/

"The most valuable work of the coming years will not be building, and investing in the curation of ever-larger mirrors of the research system, but finishing the foundational tasks we already know are necessary. That means complete, genuinely open metadata in @crossref@mastodon.online and @datacite@openbiblio.social , including affiliations with @ResearchOrgs@mastodon.social IDs."

This white paper from @digitalscience@sciencemastodon.com conceptualizes the market for research information in terms of processes of structuring and opening information.

The author argues that these dynamics generate an "innovation annulus" that "is not a pathology but a functional and permanent feature of the knowledge ecosystem." (p. 16)
He also discusses how an open core of research information could be balanced with economic incentives for innovation.

Market Dynamics, Governance and Open Research Metadata in the AI Era

The debate about scholarly knowledge infrastructure has long been framed as a contest between openness and commercial enclosure. This framing distorts both policy and practice. The real tension lies between the persistent cost of producing and refining structured metadata under deep technological friction, and the differentiated demands distinct communities place on data quality, focus and granularity. We introduce the innovation annulus: the zone between freely available structured data and the

Cost Transparency Doesn’t Conflict with Library Values. It Can Help Us Defend Them.

The value libraries bring to the research enterprise is more embedded, technical, and essential to compliance than ever. To protect our funding, we need to be able to explain what our services cost.
