@qualia@floofy.tech i wonder if anyone has made a connector where yanking it first has to compress a spring until it buckles and then the buckling pushes open a toggle lock or something. I desire Serious Magsafe for gigabit ethernet

@GroupNebula563@mastodon.social my theory is that the AI hype has created a market opportunity to flip any security vuln, even a moderate one, into a huge pile of cash via the stock market and so there's a bunch of people quietly buying compute to run classical tools like fuzzers (which actually work and have a usable false positive rate) across ~everything, then claiming an AI did it and reaping the rewards

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz any XRF (even a cheap scrapyard gun) absolutely can distinguish cadmium. Different fuel-air combos have specific flame temperatures; there's no need for plasma dynamics or mid-IR pyrometers, propane torches burn at a practical maximum of 1100°C and heat losses from radiation mean they basically can't melt silver (or copper, or iron, or etc.) Of course, by comparing the test piece to something with a known melting point (plumber's solder), you also control for flame temp.

@GroupNebula563@mastodon.social if nothing else it's a very parsimonious explanation of why every single company that discloses one of these refuses to publish any methodology beyond "secret AI did it" and then just kinda vaguely waves at the concept pf national security, yet mysteriously all the people using chatbots to file vulnerability issues on github consistently just generate spam

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz there are inexpensive-to-run non-destructive tests for this -- first and foremost, XRF. If you don't have access to the expensive equipment, though, any yellow-bottle plumber's torch from the hardware store will make a perfectly good test -- the flame temperature is just high enough to ball up the end of silver wire with effort and patience, but rapidly and easily melts plumber's solder (~350°C) and presumably also high-cadmium alloys.

@vulgalour@birdbutt.com I have a little 9" swing interwar-era Southbend and you know what they say, once you have a lathe, all your problems start to look axisymmetric (plus threads :)

@BabyFn0rd@tech.lgbt For stuff like "take these columns from a CSV and make me a bar chart", Gnuplot is probably pretty accessible from a "copy-and-paste example, change column names" perspective. Compared to Python, it's a very dedicated tool -- sort of like a command-line just for making graphs.

@vulgalour@birdbutt.com Just counting the threads in the picture, I suspect that's a 32 thread-per-inch screw, likely US #6, #8, or #10 diameter (US screws are a mess). You might be able to buy a shoulder bolt as a better improvised solution, though the part does practically cry out to be turned on a hobby lathe -- if I was on the correct side of the atlantic I'd offer to make one, but alas the international shipping would be extraordinarily expensive.

@BabyFn0rd@tech.lgbt it's right on the edge between "CLI stuff" and "programming" but have you looked into gnuplot? It's great for non-interactive visualizations akin to what Excel charts can do (and more) and it's very well suited for incorporation into a workflow or pipeline that takes CSVs/TXTs/other flat-files to PNGs or SVGs

@kitten@social.elizabeth.cat Naturally, to serve the southern hemisphere, we will also build out a Cape Horn-Cape Town route, with a scenic overland antarctic portion that will necessitate automatic sunshades for at least half the year.

@deviantollam@defcon.social if you just need 12, that's vaguely in the realm of a weekend project on a small manual lathe, depending on tolerances. What sort of price range are you looking at?
