@corbet@social.kernel.org One tactic to combat this kind of authoritarian persecution is to make an encrypted back up hosted remotely, wipe the device before crossing the border, and then restore the data when it's safe. If you're threatened into unlocking it, there would be a much lower risk of anything useful to the authorities being found, but you should always consider a device that's been seized or searched completely compromised and replace it.
But then you have to ask, will pigs start treating devices without your entire life on them as "evidence of criminal activity" because "only a criminal would factory reset their device"?
There will always be tools and tactics like this, but the actual solution to this shit is to abolish the institutions and structures that enable people to impose this "authority" over others.

@TodePond@mas.to This reminds me of a classmate in middle school who once asked a waiter at a USian restaurant we were at if the table syrup was "locally imported from Canada"

@UrbanCityCowboy @signalapp The article clearly explains how the deleted messages were recovered thanks to notification logs that had displayed message content. That has to do with the phone OS and not the app itself.
Signal is reasonably private compared to other messengers, but like I said it's not a panacea that will save your ass if you don't use in conjunction with other precautions in accordance with your threat model. The same applies to any other application or service.
In this case, not using a personal device for sensitive activities and disabling notifications entirely or setting them to not show any message content would have helped, but again, that alone would not save the suspects from being identified and apprehended.

Reposting Rebecca Watson here because her Mastodon account is currently suspended:
"I hear people like Matt Yglesias are deleting their really embarrassing posts supporting Graham Platner so I figured I would just post this screenshot of a small selection of Majority Report videos from just last month.
Note that this isn't (just) me saying "I told you so." This is me being DISGUSTED that lefty influencers laughed off every red flag, from mercenary work to Nazi tattoo to inept lies to women's credible accusations of predatory behavior before this point, forcing another woman to come forward."

Please do not, under any circumstance, run a garden hose hooked up to a water line through the roof of an "AI" data centre and leave it running overnight. The shareholders will be very upset.

Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.

From the article: “New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, a Democrat whose office defended the law, said in a statement that the decision is 'as unfortunate as it is legally incorrect'.”
We need to oust every Democrat who would disarm 'We, the People' of the exact weapons we would need to take our democracy back from the fascists, should #AgolfShitler succeed in consolidating the permanent minority rule of his #TurdReich, WHILE HE IS ACTIVELY ENACTING THE MEASURES TO DO SO.

So my Kobo e-reader has decided to not bother with resolving any domain names. It pings IP addresses just fine but can't even ping kobo.com to pull any updates. Manually installing the latest update hasn't done shit.
It's not mission critical or anything, I use Calibre for handling all my ebooks anyway, but it is weird.

We would like to address the recent controversy about one of the owners of Mullvad making a donation to a Swedish political party.

Canadian universities set up a secret network to crack down on student Palestine demonstrators
Canadian post-secondary institutions are actively complicit in Israel's holocaust against Palestinians by working to suppress Palestinian solidarity through harassment violent police assaults against their own students and faculty. While sit-ins and encampments are effective at attracting attention, they alone won't be enough to stop this repression. This needs to be addressed with direct action that causes immediate and costly disruption of operations and administration. Police will have a harder time coming to campus to assault and kidnap you if their vehicles are in no shape to bring them there, or if gates and entrances are barricaded. Campus security can't report actions if their cameras don't stay intact to record them. Complicit staff will struggle to collude and impose their authority if their power lines and infrastructure is consistently disrupted.
This isn't escalation, this is defense. They escalated when they summon thugs with batons and chemical weapons to brutalize students.
