RE: @dangillmor@mastodon.social

I saw this in the wild. The Google discover feed showed me a headline for a 4h-old Guardian article where the Google link/headline said the Iranian leader Khamenei had been killed by a US bomb strike and I thought "Wow! Already? He's only just taken over for his dead dad!"

And that really would have been news except that wasn't what the article was about at all. It was about the US not knowing who to negotiate with now that they've overturned the anthill. It only referenced the killing of the _elder_ Khamenei at the start of the war a few weeks ago, and that reference was more than 3/4 of the way through the article, in background information. I was gob-smacked that Google would do such a thing. It's awful, a full betrayal.

A reflection on "being replaced": https://nearzero.software/p/warranty-void-if-regenerated

This is honestly a pretty reasonable and even desirable vision of what things might look like. I'd be pretty okay with being the local fix-it guy. I really enjoyed using my tech skills to help people solve problems when they wanted to use the college computing centers to get things done and didn't know what they didn't know. That's been valuable to me my whole career.

Whenever I work with an agent I'm on the lookout for those moments where someone without my experience and insight would have stopped or taken what came out at face-value and hobbled along with a crappier solution because they didn't know which parts were weak and needed further probing. Sometimes "how would applying the X pattern using prior art Y change the value of that solution" is all it takes to wind up with something much better.

It remains to be seen if the world will value the better solutions over the crappy-but-works solutions (the history of capitalism suggests no). But if that accumulated insight and know-how is useful in fixing up the crappy solutions when they break, so long as there's a living to be made at it, maybe that's okay.

I don't want to be a janitor constantly cleaning up messes, but I think I'd be okay with being Harry Tuttle.

@jbz@indieweb.social Just gonna put this out there for anyone happening by who's in the Discord Diaspora:

  • Just like Mastodon, Matrix has federated homeservers, and you should not create your account on the main one unless you want your access to be contingent on yet another corpo-landlord's grace
  • If you choose to run your own homeserver, be aware that Synapse is a pain in the ass to operate, even for pros, so you might want to look into Continuwuity, which is less featureful but simple.

@sarajw@front-end.social @phanpy@hachyderm.io You can also set your subscription to a user to show only their original posts, but not their boosts. There's not a middle ground, unfortunately (eg "X% of boosts" or "no more than X boosts per day"). Phanpy's "Catch-up" feature is great for this, though... You can peruse only original posts, separate from boosts, and you can see who is doing a lot of either, and just decide "you know what, no, enough out of you", skip reading, and then easily mute them for a while.
