New: Last month, researchers found 50 paid ads on Meta’s platforms that included AI-generated child sexual abuse.

Meta said most of these ran before it rolled out new moderation AI.

Since then, Meta has ran another 250+ of these ads.

One used an image of a minor from a European royal family

NEW: The San Francisco City Attorney has hit Meta with a cease-and-desist telling it to stop publishing ads with AI-generated child sexual abuse.

The letter asks Meta why the same ads keep running.

Meta says the ads didn’t run in San Francisco and they are outside the city attorney's jurisdiction

Mastodon, I need your help! As more European countries and orgs look to ditch US technology and move to sovereign or open source alternatives, I'm trying to track these efforts. So far, I've found more than half a dozen government agencies, cities, orgs, that are embracing digital sovereignty but want to hear about other examples that I've missed. Who else should I be adding to this? Here's a list of what I have so far: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yF0yznwPWuEqI2rJi54KFTIWu0yYYVkhVDRtmuy3D2w/edit?usp=sharing #digitalsovereignty #opensource #europe #tech

NEW: A glimpse at how AI image generators are used. Researchers set up a fake image editor on Hugging Face and within a week received 1,000 prompts. 73% of them were sexual and 83% of those were asking for people (women) to be “undressed”. Around 6% of the sexual requests also targeted minors https://www.wired.com/story/hugging-face-has-a-nonconsensual-deepfakes-problem/

NEW: Over the last few months, Meta has run dozens of paid ads that included AI-generated CSAM.

The ads, some of which were linking out to “nudify” apps, targeted men in the US, UK, and a dozen European countries. Some were running in the last few days

Updated! We are now up to 20 entries in my European digital sovereignty tracker. New examples of orgs ditching US tech include media entities, the Dutch National Bank, and open source sewing software. Thanks to everyone who has sent me examples, please do keep them coming if there are others I am missing! There's a handful that I am still reviewing and I'm also considering in the next update including new categories (political declarations, funding, projects such as Euro-Office, etc) https://drive.proton.me/urls/EG60KWHEDG#7P2AL5m6PPzT #digitalsovereignty #europe #tech #opensource

NEW: San Francisco's city attorney has sent cease and desist letters to Apple and Google, telling them to stop hosting and profiting off apps that can 'nudify' people.

"These companies have responsibility to ensure that apps on their platforms do not facilitate sexual abuse," David Chiu told me

This follows researchers repeatedly finding apps, commonly face swapping apps, that can nudify people in the App Store and Google Play Store. Researchers say the companies are well aware of the problems and are not doing enough about the harmful apps

NEW:

Thousands of men are members of Telegram groups and channels that advertise and sell hacking and surveillance services that can be used to harass friends, wives and girlfriends, and former partners, new research has uncovered.

The findings, from a European nonprofit group, also say that the communities are involved in extensive trading, selling, and promotion of a huge variety of abusive content, including nonconsensual intimate images of women, so-called nudifying services, plus folders of images that sellers claim include child sexual abuse material and depictions of incest and rape.

NEW from me: Grok has continued to host sexualized and demeaning images of celebrities, a review of public posts from Grok Imagine has found.

As well as this, people have been creating full nudity (against Grok’s terms) and sex scenes with the Musk-owned AI

X and xAI removed the dozens of posts we flagged after we got in touch, but did not comment

Really does continue the UK's push to roll out more and more face recognition systems—both those operated by the police and also in privately owned shops

We report critically on Europe’s dependence on Big Tech – yet our own platform still relies heavily on U.S. systems. It’s time to change that. Together with De Correspondent, we’re phasing out U.S. technology and will document every step of the journey.
