Good news! Based on my initial tests on iOS 26.5 beta and reports from others in the community, CloudKit sync seems to be working again.

O2 Germany’s systems and customer support have always been among the worst I’ve experienced, right up there with Telekom and Deutsche Bank. But today, I had my first encounter with them in the AI era.

Chatbot: What’s the issue?
Me: I can’t log in into my account.
(…)
Chatbot: I’m sorry I can’t help you with that. Would you like to speak to a human?
Me: Yes!
Chatbot: Of course, but you’ll have to log in to your account first.
Me: 🤦‍♂️

You gotta love it!

Yesterday I realized I was locked out of my O2 account. Earlier today I ran into a technical issue with my health insurance while trying to activate my digital ID. And now, while booking a train ticket with Deutsche Bahn, you guessed it, it failed due to yet another technical issue. Truly marvelous times we live in. Can’t wait for AI to take over the world.

I somehow assumed Apple would treat the #CloudKit bug as top priority without giving it a second thought, so I actually overlooked the phrasing the DTS engineer used in their post that @iandundas pointed out. Kinda crazy!

“What I keep noticing is how much of my work isn’t about the model being smart enough. It never was. The model has been smart enough for a while. What the model can’t do is know what I’m trying to build, why it matters, and which of the ten reasonable paths forward is the right one.”

I’ve been avoiding Tahoe all this time, but the macOS 27 public beta finally got me to upgrade and migrate to the new M5 MacBook Pro I bought earlier this year. It sat in a drawer for far too long, but I’m glad I followed @marcoarment@mastodon.social’s advice on ATP and pulled the trigger early. The same configuration would cost me 1,000€ more today, now that prices have gone bonkers. 😳

The Window Chrome of Our Discontent

In a WWDC 2011 session, Dan Schimpf explained some of the goals of the refreshed design for Aqua in Mac OS X Lion were “meant to focus the user attention on the active window content”. This sentiment was echoed by John Siracusa in his review of Lion for Ars Technica: Apple says that its goal […]

@danielkasaj I ran some quick tests on two iOS 26.4 devices in the development environment. From what I can tell, a fetch only happens when the app is (a) relaunched or (b) brought back to the foreground after a delay since the last fetch (~40s). Looks like some kind of scheduling issue.

@chris That’s a great reminder, it was such a cool event! And thanks to you and Florian for taking the time the next day to talk through the ideas that eventually led to Diagrams. Those good ol’ times…

@tuparev @provuejim I still file them from time to time but also collect them in a repo (https://github.com/structuredpath/AppleBugReports) so I can quickly check if they’re fixed on newer OS versions. It now takes much less time with AI support and it helps me find workarounds… But yeah, my stats are also pretty bad. It feels like only feedbacks pushed through Apple employees get attention if at all.

@slizeray @sense @paul I also agree that apps shouldn’t rely on instant sync and should continue working in “offline” mode. However, with CKSyncEngine, you’re out of luck triggering the sync manually, as you’re handing control over to the system. The promise is that it just works. Until it doesn’t. It’s less of a black box than Core Data but still a black box…

Defuddle (by @kepano@mastodon.social) — a neat little tool that extracts the content of any URL into a Markdown document. It can also be called via curl, which makes it handy for AI workflows.

Is anyone in my circles dealing with #LongCovid and open to connecting (English / German / Czech)? The beast still won’t let me off after ten months, so I thought I’d look for sparring partners.

@fhe Huge congrats on this major release, Florian! The new app icon looks really slick and the year-in-review feature sounds very useful! Haven’t made the switch yet due to time constraints, but it’s on my list for 2024! And to be honest, the previous app icon has been a bit of a dealbreaker for me, so I’m glad to see it revamped. May the app find success on the business side of things as well!

@fhe @mstarke Oh no, yet another thing they broke in macOS! Can confirm in 26.5 beta. Just like you, I’ve always had the keyboard navigation setting enabled and tried to optimize my apps for it. Not sure if related but moving parts of the UI to SwiftUI made this quite problematic since focus handling there is still pretty rough with the KeyViewProxy bridges…

@Cykelero Nice write-up! That said, I wonder if this is more about testing how far SwiftUI can be pushed. Would you really go through all these hurdles instead of building this component in AppKit?

@jjoelson AFAIK, they do, but I just tested these on iOS 26.4 and they seem to sync just fine. Not sure why it behaves differently compared to 3rd-party apps.

Is it just me, or has macOS 27 removed the Shortcuts launcher from the menu bar?

What’s the fastest way to launch a shortcut now? Typing the shortcut’s name into Spotlight rarely works. And when it does, it’s slow as hell.

@agiletortoise@mastodon.social @gedeonm@mastodon.social @stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social There is a polling component, CKSyncEngine.fetchChanges(…), but I’ve had mixed results with it, same as the @pointfreeco@hachyderm.io folks in their SQLiteData library, which is based on CKSyncEngine: https://github.com/pointfreeco/sqlite-data/discussions/308#discussioncomment-15075494

My understanding is that it relies on remote notifications to work, which is also confirmed in Apple’s sample app README: https://github.com/apple/sample-cloudkit-sync-engine#prerequisites

About SyncEngine.fetchChanges() behavior on macOS · pointfreeco/sqlite-data · Discussion #308

Hi, i tried to use syncEngine.fetchChanges() to control changes pulling, it seems does nothing on macOS. The log of that is like this, but it does not really pull the changes: SQLiteData (shared.db...
