One idea or rule of thumb is perhaps that we should or could interact with an LLM only in the same ways that we would interact with a non-coauthor colleague... You might ask your colleague to help speed up your code, but you wouldn’t ask your colleague to write your code.
I don't follow this bit though! Why wouldn't you ask your non-author colleague to write your code, especially if they were pretty good at it and you could verify that the result was correct?

@jonmsterling I broadly agree with you, but I think Mitchell Hashimoto provides a counter-example of what an excellent free software contribution from outside a project can look like: https://mitchellh.com/writing/simdutf-no-libcxx
The standard ought to be high, but I have hope that we can build a culture where that is possible to achieve

@pozorvlak@mathstodon.xyz They have a really broad belief about the value of literature about astrophysics software that's really hard for me to square with the actual practice of building software, scientific or otherwise!
Like if you asked somebody to update a piece of functionality in scipy to support the work you were going to do, I guess they would want to produce a paper about that, following from their "Astrophysics is the literature" section? It's quite a hard-line belief about what ought to be in the literature that feels a bit fanciful to me

@tmcw for whatever it’s worth, I do have ADHD and I’m also big on long bike rides, runs without headphones, etc - they’re actually great therapy for me.
(For clarity, I’m totally unoffended by the comment, just giving my two cents, it presents many different ways)
I care very much about craft but also I care more about making computers do useful work for people, so AI has been very appealing to me. So far I do not feel like my skills have lessened, but I do fear my increasing reliance on AI providers

@paulcuth Very cool!
A feature request: I'd love to get an OPML¹ file of all the RSS feeds of the people I follow, then I could import it into NetNewsWire²

@samir@mastodon.functional.computer This is so different from my experience that it is hard for me to understand how it happened on the same computers!
(By which I don't mean at all to deny your experience, just note my surprise and confusion)
