A fun #marchintosh surprise from @csilverman@mastodon.social 😁 what fun and thank you!!

We got to experience this unusual Mac for a few hours before (predictably) the barrel jack gave up on this 5300-based machine. HD imaging and some touch-up work on the docket! 🤞

Staying in a hotel, on the 10th of 11 total floors. Got the room across from the two elevators - not complaining, the staff is great and the rooms are comfy.

But

THE ELEVATORS MAKE THE SAME SOUND AS THE ONES IN SIMTOWER

All back together and better than before! Powers reliably now. The touchscreen is still wonky - it registers presses randomly and the cursor hops around / to the edges of the screen. Can't get it to calibrate since it won't register the "press here" spots. Cleaned but haven't removed it from its frame for a thorough cleaning. Any tips welcome! Otherwise, works just like a Mac with KB and mouse! Thanks again to @csilverman@mastodon.social

Was in the midst of some printer repair, and before I could run my test, a @RToD@bitbang.social printout came through!

This is a different printer with a different appletalk card - I suspect it's the appletalk card that is grumpy, because the prior printer works just fine without the card 🤷🏼 #globaltalk

@billgoats@bitbang.social @csilverman@mastodon.social an iPad from 1997! It's a touchscreen grafted onto the guts of a 5300, designed for (most likely) accessible use by people with disabilities. For example, there is a program that lets you make 'boards' of buttons that lead to custom actions...think a picture of a water glass, and when you press, it says "Water, please" or whatever scripty thing you ask it to do. Will do a full thread eventually because there is so little info out there on this guy!

I'm not a computer engineer or anything, but seriously, why the fuck do people need so much RAM? Like what if - and hear me out here - we had to SOMEHOW make do with less?

Windows help! My style of organizing projects is one folder full of files per project. Subfolders where needed (e.g. add a 'Photos' folder if there are extensive project photos). Our team has decided each project needs a folder with a variety of nested subfolders to organize docs, and have re-filed things. Is there a way in Windows 11 to look at this in a "flippy triangle" view where I can see all items in all subfolders in one shot?

@futurebird a triangle between Toms River, Hammonton and Cape May would give you a ton of diverse areas! Beach, brackish and freshwater marshes, pine barrens, lots of farming. A few specifics: -Forsythe NWF preserve -North Brigantine -Stockton College -Cape May Wetlands -Around Hammonton is all farms I might have grown up in SJ with a lot of preservation/fisher/hunter/birder friends 😊 The deliverance-y areas of the pine barrens and Lyme disease are probably the biggest watch-outs.

With all of that out of the way, we are down to the apple 5300 guts of the thing, plus a gorgeous custom heatsink. The power board looked ok, and the barrel jack just needed the usual resolder. This was actually less stressful than a normal 5300 because there were no plastic tabs to dislodge. Only one broken standoff. And given the hardware and cable for the display, I'm assuming it's an active matrix 'c' model display.

Close ups of the two main added boards. Left is the touchscreen controller and right is the everything board as mentioned in the previous post. The touchscreen control board has only the one ribbon cable feeding into the everything board. The everything board takes the keyboard and trackpad ribbons in, plus a soldered connector from the sound port, and a floppy-like connector to an interconnect board with the removable media bay. The everything board then has a ribbon cable up to the display.

With the paper insulator removed there are only a few visible apple items: the HD sled, display cable, and inverter board. The board on the left does a lot of work (ADB related inputs, floppy port, touchscreen magic) and the one on the right (above the CD ROM) is the main touchscreen controller.

The HD is fine - the most efficient way to image it was to hook it up to the Quicksilver via a cheap USB adapter. It rebuilt the desktop file, which revised the drive size from 3.7 to 1.8 gb (on a 2.1 GB drive). Imaged completely with no problems.

This is the small board that sandwiches between the floppy bay connector, the CD ROM, the everything board, and an IR transmitter. If you recall, the removable bay for Powerbooks 5300 could only accommodate a 3.5 inch device. I once tried a 3400 CD ROM module on a disassembled 5300 and it didn't work - so they are doing some magic here to get CD and floppy out of that removable bay port.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org nope! It's a global network of vintage Mac people using appletalk via magical IP tunneling somethingorother 😊 I'm being silly using PCMacLAN on a Windows machine to access it (through a Mac router, natch) 10 year-old you would have been sooo into this! 😅 https://marchintosh.com/globaltalk.html

@smallsco@oldbytes.space nice! Thankfully this version is the whole enchilada, even though I usually don't have this running for much longer than 3 hours. It works surprisingly well (on a totally clean W98 install) and even a dummy like me could get it going!

@jacquiharper @josh0 @futurebird agree with all of this! Tbh I rarely use spray/treatments (except we spray our fenced dog area with permethrin, I know, I know...), but do light colored, long sleeved clothing and nerdy pants-tucked-into-socks. Check yourself frequently while you're out, do a thorough check when you get home, leave the clothes on the porch, and take a nice shower. Even if a tick bites you, if you remove it same-day, disease risk is low.

@csilverman@mastodon.social time for some LinkedIn trolling! (ha) Also made me wonder if some of the guts were reused in the clamshell ibook touchscreen oddity - the ports for the switches look the same and after all the work on this one, doing some ADB>USB magic would have been trivial.
