(I'm writing this as someone who has partially overcome executive functioning problems.)

If you have ADHD, you're going to encounter a lot of (social) expectations and obligations, likely so many that you'll get overwhelmed and eventually decide "fuck it all".

But an important skill to learn is to distinguish the *necessary* from the *unnecessary* obligations, and spend your spoons accordingly.

Most of the obligations that are placed on you by mainly neurotypical folks, can be safely ignored. You don't *need* to go to parties or get-togethers. You don't *need* to attend family events. You don't *need* to get a 9-to-5 job. And so on.

But for every obligation, you should ask yourself: "does ignoring this obligation have concrete, negative consequences for my ability to function and live my life?"

For example, sleep schedule is typically an important one; it doesn't need to be a standard sleep schedule, but it *does* need to have enough overlap with opening times of stores, government organizations etc. to live your life - so you need to put in the effort of finding a workable schedule *and keeping yourself to it*.

Likewise, keeping food preparation areas clean is a big one; if you're neurospicy, you probably have difficulty eating in time, and so it is important to remove any barriers that would keep you from doing so (like a dirty kitchen). So you need to invest the spoons in making yourself do the cleaning after use.

And so on, and so forth. Identify the things that are actually necessary for you to function, and spend your spoons on those first to build up a baseline of executive functioning, even when it sucks, even when you don't want to. Drop the obligations you have no use for, even if people complain.

But take the *actually necessary* obligations seriously, and don't skip out on them or let yourself find excuses to delay them.

Over the next $unspecified_time I will be migrating to my own fedi instance over at @joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech - eventually this account will redirect and you should be following it automatically, but if you want to be sure that you don't miss anything, you should give it a manual follow now!

Can't really test out my new instance without actually posting there, so I'll be splitting my activity across accounts to see how well it goes. Once I'm happy, the automatic redirect will happen.

I'm gonna be spending the next two weeks sorting through all the new thoughts and questions about identity that I acquired at #WHY2025, aren't I?

This feels like MCH2022 all over again (it isn't a bad thing, probably)

@sandradejong@mastodon.nl @FransVeldman@fediverse.thefloatinglab.world Dat is inderdaad ook mijn zorg.

@fiercemilder@mastodon.ie By and large, this is only a risk from the "everybody should use Mastodon" perspective, though. From the "fostering a safe community" perspective, the problem is very quickly solved with a defed.

I've created an account for Promistreams, the interoperable streams spec and library I've been working on for JS, where I'll be posting regular-ish updates and information about it: @promistreams@fedi.slightly.tech

There's not much on there, it doesn't even have a logo yet, but stuff will start appearing there eventually! If better streams in #Javascript interest you at all, I'd recommend giving it a follow 🙂

@ainmosni@berlin.social @Anke@social.scribblers.club That's collectivism vs. individualism; though those map very closely onto egalitarian vs. hierarchical, because the purpose of individualism is to gain an advantage over others (which is a goal provided by hierarchy) whereas the purpose of collectivism is to collectively move ahead everyone's well-being (which is an egalitarian measure). Cases of individualism masquerading as collectivism notwithstanding (eg. authoritarian 'communist' governments).

The rest of your post sounds like some bullshit philosophizing to justify collaboration, frankly.

@Angle@anticapitalist.party @dee@grafana.social My main question would how such an organization gets funded - the answer for the *maintainer* organizations is obvious (from the funders), but this intermediary would also need funding somehow, and accepting it *from* the maintainer organizations would create some perverse incentives, I think; the intermediary would try to get *any* agreement closed (at least under the rules of capitalism).

@ainmosni@berlin.social @Anke@social.scribblers.club I mean, this may end up being a definitional issue, but by the only definition I've ever found that makes sense (left = egalitarian, right = hierarchical), bigotry *has* to exist on some level for right-wing ideology to function, because there needs to be a 'lesser' class of people for a 'justified' hierarchy to be able to exist.

@ainmosni@berlin.social @Anke@social.scribblers.club That I agree with; I tend to avoid the terms for that reason. But if they must be used, then the egalitarian vs. hierarchy is the only internally consistent definition I've seen of, that also actually matches the real-world usage closely enough to be useful :p

@randomwalker@mastodon.social Half the point of the fediverse is that it's not *supposed* to scale. It focuses on small-scale community building, with people you actually want to be with. The total usercount doesn't really change that, because your view into the network is (deliberately) very limited.

People are *correct* to complain about that. The problem here are not the people doing the complaining; the problem are the people doing the misuse.

"Corporations shouldn't get the right to decide who does and doesn't stay online"

They already do, and this has been true since pretty much the inception of the internet. What HE decides doesn't matter for this. HE doesn't make law nor legal precedent.

"But we should campaign against that, even if it's already the case! They should lose that right!"

Perhaps! But then don't you think there's better examples to take than fucking *Kiwifarms*? It's not like being refused service is a rare issue among marginalized folks, and curiously the EFF doesn't take *them* as an example. I wonder why.

"But precedent is important!"

What HE does sets no legal precedent. No courts were involved in this entire precedent.

"But I mean *social* precedent, not *legal* precedent!"

We already widely socially accept that services get cut off. Not just obviously malicious things like spam, but also oppressed groups like sex workers. This *shouldn't* be socially acceptable, but it is. If you're worried about 'precedent', we already have it, and KF doesn't change anything about it.

"But if we can't protect the worst people, then it will also harm the oppressed people!"

This is a somewhat absurd line of reasoning that ignores that fascists are always the *last* in line to get hit with consequences, not the first. Once the fascists start getting bothered, that means you're too late and everyone else has already been subject to this shit for a long time. That's how power dynamics work.

"But the EFF are lawyers, it's their job to talk about precedent!"

Then maybe they should shut their mouths about this, when precedent isn't the issue, and the problem isn't their area of expertise. Leave these issues to the people who actually understand how to deal with them.

"But Kiwifarms aren't fascists! They're just a forum, and they don't allow harassment to be organized on it!"

You've bought into fascist propaganda, sorry. Look deeper into their history and kill count. Non-zero kill counts don't just magically happen - and neither does cheering about it after the fact.

"But KF will just move somewhere else!"

This is irrelevant to whether HE wants to provide service to them; but aside from that, the point isn't to stamp out every last trace of KF, it's to make their continued existence difficult enough that it discourages further harassment.

"But the collateral damage! They denied service to an entire provider, not just to KF!"

When there's a nazi at a table and 10 others, there's 11 nazis at the table. Don't knowingly associate with fascists, and certainly do not provide services to them. Very simple. You should direct this complaint at the provider who decided to host KF.

"But this is the job of the cops!"

KF has existed for many years. Cops have not done anything against them, and they won't do so in the future. Quite a few of them are actively *members of* KF.

"Then you should reform the cops!"

A) This is not viable, as you will learn from basically anyone who has spent a non-negligible amount of time on trying to make that happen.

B) Even if it were, that would *at best* be a multi-year process. During which marginalized folks would continue to get harassed and killed. The answer to that is "no".

"But we shouldn't give up these really important principles, even when things get bad! They protect us all!"

You know that meme from Shrek? "Some of you will die, but that's a sacrifice that I'm willing to make."

That's you right now. You're demanding that marginalized folks sacrifice themselves for your personal comfort blanket around internet freedom.

Don't you think that you should leave that decision to the marginalized folks affected by it, whether they wish to be your cannon fodder?

And of course that 'sacrifice' was never actually necessary to preserve internet freedoms, but that's something that you're unlikely to understand until you've accepted that it's not your choice to make and you'll have to look for other ways.

You're presenting it as if this is in any way a normal or acceptable situation, specifically as a rebuttal to "people should stop being abusive". *That* is what makes it apologia.

I agree that 'good' and 'bad' are not a property of people themselves, and that it's about the choices they make. The bit I had a problem with in your comment, was mainly the "people lucky to be more adapted" part, because it makes it sound like there's no responsibility to change, you just have to be lucky to 'fit in' or not. But you *do* have a responsibility towards others to do the best you can, whether or not that's the "normal" thing in a society. Otherwise, I think we agree.
