30 years ago, a friend paid me for a gig with late 19th-century glass negatives.

I specifically chose the "flawed" ones (blurry/underexposed) thinking that maybe they were never originally printed, and therefore I might be the first person to see these remarkable images.

I’m sharing one a day for the next 10 days. Clues suggest these were taken in Western Massachusetts approximately 120+ years ago. High res versions are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jeremyosborn/albums/72177720298855306/

Glass plate negative scans

A collection of glass plate negatives ranging from what I believe is the late 19th century, possibly early 20th century. Precise location of where the images were taken is unknown, but at least one of them was from Greenfield, Massachusetts and the collection was housed in Northampton, Massachusetts, so my best guess is these images were taken in Western Massachusetts. I obtained these negatives in the late 1990s in exchange for doing some web design work for a friend who was an antique and e

Monochrome watercolor pencil sketch of a Pitch Pine tree

This tree was quite a specimen, standing lone near the coast of Block Island Sound in Rhode Island.

1/10 detail Here's a cropped detail from the above 4x5 glass negative. I think this is a masterful and captivating portrait. For me, there's a youthful optimism visible in the expression of the (presumed) daughter as she's looking off into the distance and a world-weary expression of the (presumed) mother on the right looking right into the camera. #Photography #History #GlassNegatives #MonochromeMarch

3/10 from my series of 19th century photos

The most pristine group portrait I have, virtually everyone standing still, so no motion blur from the long exposure.

Two cuts of meat hanging from the doorway and the gents in the back wearing white aprons lead me to conclude these are the employees of a butcher shop. If I had to guess, based on the more urban setting, maybe this is Springfield, MA?

4/10 detail The fashion of the woman in the photo strongly points to this being taken somewhere between 1894-1898. In my research, I've found that she is wearing gigot sleeves, which is French for "mutton leg"! Similar to bell-bottoms in the 1970s, these were at peak puffy in this period before going out of fashion. Based on my best guess, the father would have been in his mid 30s during the Civil War. His quiet and patient expression fascinates me. #Photography #History #glassnegatives

@toddanderson@mstdn.social Nice work, the effort was admirable, and the paintings even more so! That large piece (silo began repaired?) is really cool, a fine centerpiece for the collection. 👏 Now do July!

@rowyn@mastodon.art This is what's so cool about old 4x5 glass negatives, compared to a "standard" 35mm film negative, they have approximately 15× more image area (resulting in about 10–20× more usable detail!)

@small_cypress@indieweb.social Right? A rarity for the time when everyone typically had to stand still for photos. There weren't really "candid" moments until years later when film and shutter speeds could capture them.

@blag hmm, bizarre web things..maybe look at turning off acceleration in the browser? Or if you were sharing the whole desktop may just trying to share a window if that’s an option?

@blag I've seen similar issues when Hardware Acceleration is enabled. Try going into Zoom > Settings > Video > Advanced and turning off anything labeled hardware acceleration. Then restart Zoom and cross fingers!

@colorblindcowboy@mastodon.art Yes, it's an unusual angle and framing for the time. But also, haven't we all been there? "No tripod! I need something, anything, to prop this thing up, hmmm, this rock will do..."

@bit101@mstdn.social yes, they no doubt had instructions from the photographer to stand absolutely still for at least 5 seconds. That requirement, btw, makes it all the more interesting when you get honest expressions of a person’s personality
