3/ views got more dramatic approaching and hiking up Baden Powell. Just wore trail running shoes for the three days since I anticipated no snow except this area. Carried an ice axe and microspikes though which helped for the final mile to the summit that was just steep boot pack. Nice juxtaposition to the rest of the hike and satisfying lunch up top where it was dry (op pic).

5/ day one continued after covering the ridge west of Baden Powell down to Little Jimmy spring and then sunset at Islip saddle before going over Williamson to get city lights of Los Angeles after dark. Past Williamson the endangered frog closure left 2.7 miles of roadwalk detour down to Buckhorn camp to end the day (~31 miles / 8,000 feet of climbing, the big hump of the route)

4/ a couple bonus shots from up on Baden Powell. Wally the ancient limber pine clinging to the ridge and looking east to Mt San Antonio and Pine Mountain's west ridge.

2/ went up Acorn trail from Wrightwood late Tuesday night so I could already be up on PCT in the morning and get an early start for day one. Hope for the day was to get up and over Mt Baden Powell and past all the snow before dark. Nice morning color with great views of Iron and Pine mountains.

9/ day two: after climbing out of Cooper canyon and over Cloudburst summit and down to 3 Points, it was a hot afternoon and mellow evening hike over Pacifico Mtn. Very familiar stretch. Took a long break at the creek by Sulphur springs to wash my clothes and soak my feet and made it over Pacifico for sunset and down to stealth camp at the rest area by Mill Creek summit trailhead by 10pm for an early night.

7/ day two: I left Buckhorn camp Thursday morning excited about my favorite area of this section Burkhart trail and Cooper canyon, only to discover they'd both been completely destroyed by the Bridge fire and subsequent heavy rain events. Pretty speechless. These two creek canyons were a shady oasis full of enormous old trees. A real gem when it gets hot. Took a long time to pick through, very slow morning, not much trail left for miles.

6/ my volunteer trail crew chief got in touch randomly day one and when he realized where I was hiking he asked if I could scout the wilderness zone approaching Islip saddle and Mt Williamson for an upcoming project. Good timing, hope it helped. They were aware of a lot of these but I was able to extend the known issues. They cleared this all with hand tools yesterday and today.

10/ swear I shared this, guess not? Day 3 was nicely uneventful. 34 miles home over Mt Gleason and very familiar trail. Started before 6 am for an easy 10 by 10 then had a chill afternoon and evening hike with lunch at North Fork ranger station and dinner down at Indian Cyn trailhead. Chatted with Ranger Todd, he confirmed what I'd seen that there weren't any thru hikers yet (by today there are). I chatted with a section hiker at dinner, first person I'd seen. Got home by 10pm.

8/ day two: and some of the remains of Cooper canyon after Burkhart trail. Had to alternate between walking up the creek bank and through the creek for most of the way to dodge downed trees and washed out trail. It will be interesting to see how this section is reworked.

@andifluffkitten@mastodonapp.uk really lost a lot in these fires. It always changes though and like you said, some newly maintained route will get built though it somehow.

@winissen@sfba.social yeah I hadn't realized the fire had spread back that way. At least, as a fairly wet area it will recover in its own way but it'll never be the same.

@bradmarston@mountains.social make it happen! I came south on E a couple weeks back. Flowers were out and the creeks were flowing. Perfect time before the heat.

@Coho@mountains.social no, I live at the junction of sections D and E so I like to hike them a couple times a year. They're each very different and it's fun to do a big hike leaving from, or arriving, home on foot.

The most successful team I worked on had a strict rule that engineers don’t move on to other tasks until their current one is completely done (inc polish and known bugs), because there’s possible infinite work and time in the remaining work. If you move on to another feature you’re just adding another possible infinite time sink. It’s hardline and I’ve never seen anywhere else do that but it worked.
