@Clundoff@wandering.shop And the math simply doesn't work. As Ed Zitron points out constantly, OpenAI and Anthropic are starting to hit the point at which no one will give them more money - and they can't charge what they need to in order to be profitable. The one silver lining in all of this? Oracle, and more specifically Larry Ellison, are going to be wrecked because of all this. As in Larry's likely to lose the source of his fortune. 2/2

@Clundoff@wandering.shop I think we are actually at the beginning of the end, for the simple reason that as soon as the AI companies tried charging something closer to what they need to in order to simply break even, the users' costs skyrocketed. CFOs started getting involved and saying "What did we get for the $25 million we spent last *month*?" When good answers weren't forthcoming, because they don't exist, companies started putting limits on LLM usage. 1/

@Pepijn@mastodon.online Different story: from 2003-2005 I worked for a large junior college. One day I was the security rep accompanying an inspector of some kind (I forget who he worked for) and one of our network engineers in our main, very old, and small, data center. He notices a device in tge bottom of a rack. “Is that really a Bay Networks router?” “Yup.” “What does it do?” “It’s part of the network core.” At that point Bay Networks had not existed for over a decade.

@sundogplanets Offered in the spirit of encouragement: even the most cursory look at the financial goings-on in the AI space indicate that it's going to come crashing down, because the math simply doesn't work. And that collapse is almost certainly going to happen before anyone gets close to launching datacenters. If you get a chance Ed Zitron has a refreshingly frank assessment of the financial side of things.

@sundogplanets Theoretically, at least, microgravity might allow the production of materials that can’t be made in 1G. I’m pretty sure some small-scale feasibility studies have been done but can’t recall any smashing successes. Your point about the economics is dead-on. The material produced is going to have to be incredibly valuable in its application to be worth it. And yes, it’s a 1970s-80s scifi staple.

Me: I'm going to duck over to the game store to buy some primer, so I can get started on my BattleTech miniatures when I get time.

Also me: walks out of the game store with a can of spray primer.

...And a starter set of brushes, a palette, a starter pack of paints, and an Inner Sphere Security Lance pack of miniatures.

@sarahtaber@mastodon.online George_Takei_Oh_My_dot_gif 😆 On a more serious note, and I just left this comment on the new vid - would love to see you tackle how agriculture, especially in the US, is the number 1 consumer of water supplies, and how growing the wrong crops for an environment is a really bad idea, instead of tailoring what you grow to your local ecological conditions.

@Popehat A+ to this. The unofficial motto of St. Johns College in Annapolis is "In order to know how little you know, you have to know a lot." I know just enough about some of the things going on to be able to shout "I don't know and you don't either, so sit down and let's see what actually happens."

@Sheril The big question I have is about the biofuels bit, because they often require Enron-like levels of accounting shenanigans in order to claim to be carbon-neutral or better. This is still good news overall, though.
