eupol, age verification
Sadly, the thread that I wanted to reply to was deleted before I managed to finish my reply. The context is the European age verification implementation. --- I'm against the entire idea of creating an infrastructure whose only purpose is to discriminate people. It's a system that is designed to discriminate (age) while it discriminates (nationality), and that theoretically can be used to discriminate other aspects. I don't care how fancy and cool the cryptography behind that is. This thing shouldn't be improved; it should be burned to the ground!

eupol, age verification
@Karcsesz@equestria.socialhaving this system as an option is an improvement over current private sector solutionsThis isn't about replacing private age verification implementations. It's an attempt to force age verification everywhere. The main reason people object to age verification is that it's privacy invasive. With this solution they can divide those people and counter one of the main arguments against age verification. This comes at a time when there are initiatives to ban access to social media entirely for children. This is an attack on freedom of expression. People ignore that children also have human rights. And just think about the implications for the Fediverse. And to be fair, they do identify a valid symptom of curious kids with overworked (or absent) parents getting in harm's way.If parents are so absent that they can't do their job as parents, then that's something the child welfare agency should deal with. Parental neglect is the main catalyst that's extremely harmful here. Many psychological disorders are caused by parental neglect.

@Polak23@equestria.social Attention ponies. This isn't true. Let's fact-check this:

There are plenty of experts who attest that Polak is indeed cute:

  • https://equestria.social/@OlenianDeer/113256588721981537
  • https://equestria.social/@fauli1221/110741079235659232

There is only one source that I know of that claims that Polak isn't cute. And that source is biased... but very cute.

So the consensus is that Polak is cute.

@davidbcohen@twit.social I don't know what's so funny about that because that's just factually correct. There is no source, no open-source license. An API was publicized with an OSI-incompatible, legally unenforceable (at least in Europe), strict EULA. This is not disapproving of a good move. Praise where praise is due. Bose, in this case, should get praised for publicizing the API and not for open-sourcing something. @cloudhop@equestria.social

@cloudhop@equestria.social but that's not what they did - they clearly stated that it was a bad thing that Bose didn't get it right the first time. The only comments I've seen so far are those on The Verge. In general we all, including you, do judge people and companies based on past behavior. That concept is called "trust". And trust very much is a subjective matter.

@cloudhop@equestria.social Okay, I'm mostly disagreeing here. First, words have meaning. They publicized the API. Good! Please don't call it open sourcing, though. The license attached to that document is more on the strict side and definitely not open source. Calling it open source would be misleading. They received praise from plenty of people (the majority of the comments on the verge, at least). They also received criticism. Both are valid. Criticizing something isn't a punishment. You can be happy and praise Bose. Other people can still be displeased. Both are valid positions. Telling other people to shut up is what I take issue with.

@Quilly@equestria.social You want to use FDroid? Well, no problem, use the "advanced workflow" and uncertify your Android... What? You also like to use your banking app that you have to use since no alternative exists. Well, you can't do that on an uncertified Android. Too bad. It will play out like this... I mean, that's one of the reasons why many ROMs died and nobody is rooting their device anymore.

@rysiek@mstdn.social That, as far as I know, depends on the implementation of the resolver. Since some resolvers serve stale cache entries on errors. I'm arguing in favor of long TTLs, btw.

They are also kind of contradicting themselves because they themselves are "praising" Bose for taking the right direction. If you've never encountered this problem, then congratulations, you live in a slightly less hellish place than I doI fear the inverse is the case. I don't consider it that harmful because I see far worse stuff.

Domain TTLs across the Fediverse. Apparently relying on cache is rather unpopular.

I think Fediverse admins would benefit from looking at this paper:
https://ant.isi.edu/~hardaker/papers/2019-10-cache-me-ttls.pdf

We showed that longer TTLs have important
performance benefits, since caching greatly reduces latency, even
more than anycast, as well as reducing traffic.
