Last night I went to a 70th birthday party and ended up sitting next to Frank.

Frank used to work as a computer programmer, because this was the 1970s to 90s and people had normal job titles that described real things, instead of "full stack orchestration engineer" or "solutions architect".

Anyway Frank's employer was the Victorian Attorney General's department. He wrote, updated and maintained in-house software for managing the court system, trial documentation managements and so on using low level languages.

The point of this post is that there was nothing special about this period of history that made it possible for government departments to write and maintain their own software to solve their own problems then but not now.

The complete lack of any in-house capacity to do this kind of thing is a political choice. Frank is a reminder of that.

Some good news!!!!

The #Copyright Amendment Bill 2026 passed both houses yesterday.

This might sound like an incredibly niche and boring thing but this will have huge positive ramifications for Australians' access to collections in libraries and archives, and make online education much safer from copyright trolls.

https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Bills_Legislation/Bills_Search_Results/Result?bId=r7402

Most notably: Once this is signed into law it will be legal to copy/publish orphan works after a diligent search for a copyright owner. This will impact thousands of works currently sitting in copyright limbo.

Thanks @Trishh@ausglam.space for the heads up.

When I’m working on coding projects I occasionally worry that I don’t know what I’m doing and people will laugh at how embarrassingly amateur my code is.

But then sometimes my Windows laptop can’t shut down at the end of the work day because “the application ‘Shutting Down’ is still open” and I feel better.

Reminder that Australia will undergo a national test of the new AusAlert system at 2pm AEST 27 July. This will sound an audible siren on all networked devices, even if they are switched to silent mode. If you or someone you know has a secret safety device (phone, tablet, smart watch) that needs to remain hidden, it must be switched off or in flight mode for 24 hours on either side of the scheduled alert. Clarivate: We have decided to ignore best practice password hygiene in favour of password security theatre. Thankyou for your attention to this matter.

Hey so random recommendation for Australians: I recently started listening to Reformasi Dispatch podcast and now I know 98% more about current affairs & politics in Indonesia specifically and SouthEast Asia generally. If you'd like to know more about our neighbours to the north, I highly recommend it!

Attention transport and energy nerds!!!

For reasons that should be obvious,I am curious about the reliance of farming on diesel vehicles. Seems that even heavy rig trucks are available in electric now, but why not tractors? Is this just a matter of a delayed investment pipeline or is the technology not there yet for some reason, or are the industry monopolists just not interested, or..? Running electric harvesters off solar seems like a no brainer somewhere like Australia's wheat belt.

@internetarchive @OwenK the idea that every web page that has ever existed must continue to exist in perpetuity is childish, dangerous, and grossly misunderstands archival management norms.

🚨 ausglam.space maintenance 🚨

Ok thanks to @misty@digipres.club I *probably* have the answer to why earlier upgrade attempts failed, so ausglam.space will have some down time later today, and 🤞 we will then be upgraded to the latest Hometown and Mastodon.

This is very good. You should read it.

"Technology doesn’t need to be free. It cannot be free because freedom as a concept applies to people."

I thought I was going mad but Mastodon really does send the "object" in "Flag" activities as an array and not an ...object.

What even are words.

ausglam.space will be down for maintenance later tonight.

Down for how long, you ask? Well that depends on how incompetently I manage the upgrade.

Why take hallucinogenic drugs when you could simply read this article in Harpers?

Still thinking about how CAUL unceremoniously dumped the international collective they built, one year after winning an OE Global award for building it.

@phette23 I think vector search will be the actually-useful legacy of this moment. Anything else exciting (positive) will be political, not technological. Vendor reliance and consolidation is the biggest thing to address.

The point of AI is to discipline labour. The "productivity" comes from suppressing wages through fear.
