I interviewed the devs behind Azahar, the #Nintendo #3DS emulator We chatted about their paths into 3DS development, Citra, the creation of Azahar itself, and the new wave of dual screen handheld #gaming consoles bringing fresh attention to 3DS #emulation There's plenty here on #opensource and preservation, the future of Azahar and more. Hope you all enjoy it: https://gardinerbryant.com/inside-azahar-interviewing-the-duo-keeping-the-3ds-alive/

My little article on how Billie Eilish shared a picture on her instagram account showing her old #Nintendo DSi handheld, someone shared that on Reddit, and the comments ended up being vile and exactly what you'd expect them to end up being

Also, a bonus added of a Mastodon user who attacked 𝘮𝘦 for sharing a picture of it here. Weird and strongly ironic:

You Don’t Look Like a Gamer: On Toxicity, Gatekeeping, and Women Who Share Their Gaming Lives Online

There’s often a reaction that appears whenever women publicly share that they play games. It’s not always overt hostility. Sometimes it’s framed as jokes, disbelief, or mild condescension. Other times it slips into something more direct: questioning authenticity, mocking interest, or redirecting attention away from the person

What a depressing glimpse of the future With #Sony #PlayStation sharing that they're no longer going to use physical discs, they're killing the ability for #libraries to give kids a chance to play games. Or for gamers to be able to buy and sell a game to fund their next purchase. On top of the rising storage costs, #gaming is becoming less and less accessible to people

Gardiner and I both worked on a depressing little article about how A.I. companies are quite literally destroying warehouses full of books for their own profit. This is (I think) the second time Gardiner and I have written an article together. I hope that even though it is some sobering news, it might help as yet another reminder that everything we love is slowly being taken from us by companies working for their own ends. https://gardinerbryant.com/ai-companies-are-now-destroying-warehouses-full-of-rare-books/

My new obsession is ditching apps (streaming and so on) and picking up dedicated devices to keep me off my phone. E-readers, retro handhelds, literal automatic watches, & now I'm ditching streaming music (let's face it, Spotify is quite evil!) and building my very own offline music library

My first device I got for this adventire is the Innioasis Y1, a clear #Apple #iPod throwback/nostalgia:

Some nice #GOG news in that they're now 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 trying to reduce the number of games on their platforms with missing updates. The lack of updates on games is so bad there is a giant megathread on their forums called 𝘎𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘎𝘖𝘎 𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘷𝟤

If you're like me, and wondering wondering why the #GameHub Discord server wanted to know your gender before you were allowed to join in, that is changed now

A colleague shared a link to their server and I went along with the on-boarding things to fill out, but the last question asked was what my gender is, and they don't need that

A program which runs full PC games - #Steam & #GOG & so on - has no business requiring that.

So I got them to change it after chatting to my GameHub friend!

Well the next step in my chronicles for finding an alternative to streaming apps like Spotify has gone live

This time I ordered and tested out the Snowsky Echo, and it is rather lovely

I used this one mostly with wired earbuds (IEMs called Moondrop Chu II's) and the sound is by far nicer than what you're used to experiencing with bluetooth!

This one was shared by a user over on Lemmy, where the developer created a synthwave game you can play in your browser, called Geo Icarus

(just one warning, it can take some time to load, to decompress some binary bits. So if it looks like it has hung, it has not!)

...also, won't work if you use LibreWolf, as that one disables webgl by default!

If you've got AYN's amazing dual screen retro handheld, the AYN Thor, you might like to know about EmuLnk. This software transforms the bottom screen of #emulation into a whole dedicated display for the games you're playing

Maps, health, inventory, drop rates, featured screens...none of these were available for these (single screen) games before it, it really is some clever code

I chatted to Miso, the sole dev about how it is made, and what's in store for the future:

If you’re anything like me, the recent wave of dual-screen retro handhelds feels like a return to the Nintendo DS era. You pick up something like the AYN Thor and, for a moment, it all clicks! Two displays, stacked, full of potential. But then you start using it

Whatever bad press you've seen is from users who can't follow instructions, or maybe are slightly more computer illiterate some. When Steam has an update, make sure you wait a few hours for the Decky update to release first! Install that, then update your Steam Deck...and that's it! I swear by Decky, the few plugins I use are so damned handy :)

It is beautifully slim, you've got a ton of options for what apps/reading options you want to opt for (like borrowing from a library!), the only downside is really the slight overhead which Android brings. The battery takes a 𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 hit running that OS Still, I'd recommend it myself. Very strongly!

@nu_scooter@woof.tech Knowing libraries and librarians, I'm aware what they've got on their plates to keep the service going for the community. I know what is realistic and what isn't. Having an item checked out regularly helps them provide stats to ask for a budget at the next meeting, the way libraries can thrive is by having physical things: books, magazines, consoles and games all checked out. The more that are borrowed, the more they can sustain themselves to local budgets.

@nu_scooter@woof.tech Right now any child can go to a local library and borrow a PS5 game. Heck, some libraries even have entire consoles to borrow. This means gaming as a whole is accessible no matter what walk of life you're from. If you're less well off, or less inclined to spend big bucks, you can use your local services to help. Discs? make this possible If you replace physical games with codes tied to accounts, this entire service is lost, and kids miss out. Losing physical media is a big problem
