Cracked Maniac Mansion on GOG and Steam

Today marks the fifth anniversary of my least favorite @scummvm@manitu.social fix ever: Patching the cracked version of Maniac Mansion sold on GOG and Steam. (I think even Limited Run Games used it.) Every keypad in the game will accept any code as long as the last digit is incorrect. 🙄

https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/commit/07617f8c5f7b136fb0b873b52e5199654af9ec9c

The bug was reported to both Disney and GOG several times, along with test cases technical explanations and suggested fixes, to no avail.

Random Monkey Island memory: The first time I played The Secret of Monkey Island, and was told to go to the Scumm Bar, I completely missed the sign and walked right past it. (It probably didn't help that my monitor was a bit dark.)

I guess I could have saved myself the embarrassment if I have bought the Sega CD version instead. But then I would have suffered the even worse embarrassment of playing the worst version of the game!

Random Monkey Island memory: When I first played Monkey Island 2, I got to the point where you call LucasArts support for help. One of the things you can ask about is the "stump joke", and I had no idea what it was talking about.

Not only did I not know, it turns out I never had a chance to, because the joke had been cut from the version I played. It wasn't until later that I finally got to see what it was all about.

Maybe I should have called support...?

Today I think I'll spare a thought for all the level designers out there, who have spent countless hours modelling the ceilings that almost no one will ever pay attention to.

But I did. (This time. Of course, it helps that nothing was trying to kill me at this point.)

@aaronsgiles Good thing too, because it says on the box that Maniac Mansion is included. I've heard the "Enhanced Mac Version, Power Macintosh Native" sticker was supposed to cover that, but if so someone must have missed that memo. Unfortunately the Easter egg doesn't yet work in ScummVM. Much of the work has been done, but there's currently no easy way to even detect the Mac version of Maniac Mansion.

In 1 Kings 18, the prophets of Baal were expected to be able to demonstrate the power of their god with a tangible, no-nonsense miracle on demand, or suffer the consequences.

Why don't we hold all religions to that standard?

@danielsaidi @grumpygamer @thomasfuchs I do that with Loom. Unfortunately I don't have the EGA version of MI1 so the VGA floppy version is as close as I get. At least that one has the "stump joke". The first time I played MI2 I had only played the VGA CD version so the "stump joke" joke went right over my head. The Special Edition is technically impressive, and I can see the love that must have gone into it. But to me it feels a bit awkward. Haven't played it since it was released, though.

I don't know what the story behind the "HELP! Charity Compilation" is, and I'm familiar with less than half of the games on it. But it's nice it is to see that they went with some genuinely good ones, rather than just scraping the bottom of the shareware barrel.

I know Prince of Persia and The Case of the Serrated Scalpel alone would have been well worth the $9.50 (shipping cost included) I ended up paying for it.

Or at least it would if I didn't already have those two. 😀

@dazo@infosec.exchange @grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place Funnily enough, I remember reading a letter to Your Computer (the British one) in Februray 1985, lamenting that these new 64 KB monster machines made for sloppy programming and had taken all the fun out of computers. 😁

@brouhaha@mastodon.social I've heard about those bugs, but I'm pretty sure they were fixed in later versions. Unfortunately they also managed to introduce some new bugs along the way. Of course, that's with 40 years of hindsight. Back when I originally played them I only ran into maybe three or four bugs in the entire Infocom library of games.

@aaronsgiles Very nice to see this sort of thing, even if it's not my kind of games. But with luck, eventually there will be one that is. Pity it appears to be Windows only, when at least DREAMM runs so well on other platforms.

@aaronsgiles Running them is easier than ever. Buying some of them is unfortunately harder than ever. 😕 I know there are plenty of places where you can find them, but I'd prefer if there were official re-releases. (I'd also like it if some of the current re-releases weren't quite so shoddily made.)

@grumpygamer Took you long enough! Then again, there are vaguely Monkey Island shaped islands all over New Zealand, but this particular Monkey Island is apparently not one of them.

If I understand things correctly, when you type "ROBOT, something" the "ROBOT" part is rewritten as a TELL action. V-TELL checks if there are more commands (the "something" part), and if there are it sets WINNER to PRSO and HERE to the winner's location. (Strictly speaking, it should probably use META-LOC instead of LOC.) The Wizard's action routine handles the TELL action before it can reach V-TELL, so WINNER never changes. Which is wrong, because he's supposed to respond to some commands.

@scummvm @dada78641 My experience on Linux was that it sounded terrible. But I'm clearly not the target audience since I find missing subtitles far more bothersome than missing speech.

@grumpygamer But it was relaxing! Then again, I haven't had the time to play Death By Scrolling lately. I've been more into Return to Dark Castle. It's the nostalgic kind of non-relaxing for me.

@ThreeOhFour The picture with the eye (?) reminded me of Kubo and the Two Strings, except of course completely different. Still, it was the first thing that popped into my head. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afoZckvHM1U

@ThreeOhFour I liked it too. Probably not quite as much as it deserved because of how unfamiliar I am with that genre, but all Laika movies are worth watching. My favorites are still Coraline and Paranorman, but I look forward to seeing what Wildwood is all about. I've liked stop motion since I first saw Wallace and Gromit. Something about the way things looked worn I guess. Of course, these days computer animation does that too, but it took a while for it to catch up.

I don't know if it will ever cease to amaze me that what was once state-of-the-art (or at the very least state-of-SOME-art) now runs on a smartphone.

It may not be the best way of running them - in fact, it can be pretty darn awkward - but the very fact that they run at all...

Computer games have come a long way towards being accepted as mainstream, of course, but I can't help feeling we still have some ways to go.

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place I never had a C64, but that's pretty! I've seen screenshots of what Loom might have looked like on it, but I don't know if they were just proof-of-concept or if someone was actually trying to implement it. Either way, I imagine Monkey Island would be a lot harder. I just hope they don't get hit with a cease-and-desist for their trouble.

@zarfeblong@mastodon.gamedev.place Well that's odd... It works from my computer. The last few times I tried to read it was from my phone, and there it doesn't. Instead, I get a "Mattermost" login page. Maybe it's being overly sensitive about the connection not being secure, or something like that? But it's a relief that it's still up!

@zarfeblong@mastodon.gamedev.place I was more annoyed by the adverbs in Seastalker than in Deadline. There is one situation where doing things carefully makes a noticeable difference. Even if it isn't the only solution, it's the kind of situation where in real life I'd be careful by default. (Also, Deadline is one or my favorite Infocom games, while Seastalker is not. Which was so disappointing, because I really liked the idea of it. Just not the execution.)
