So, I'm pulling up my stakes and moving instances. There is no drama or reason why, I've just been feeling like a change. I've learned a lot here on social.coop over the last 7 years, especially helping out in the tech working group. I've just been wanting a local timeline that's a bit more synced up with my interests, so I am headed over to merveilles.town. Look for me there? Hopefully this Mastodon move feature will let people know when I have landed. & big thanks to @d6@merveilles.town for the invite.

I never noticed how #Maintenance has the French word "maintenant" in it, which means "now", and is composed of the words hand (main) and to hold (tenir). It speaks to how maintenance requires attention and engagement with things as they are. It also reminds me of one of the perks of maintenance work is that it grounds and connects you to the present.

It's hard to overstate how useful it is to be able to watch a web archiving crawler do its work (the actual browser windows) while also being able to inspect, edit and click on the the queue of URLs yet to be crawled. Maybe there are other solutions to this, but I've yet to see any software do better at this than @webrecorder@digipres.club's Browsertrix https://browsertrix.com. I've found it's especially important when you are using a browser "profile" to be able to crawl otherwise unavailable content.

Because Meta et al. are so actively engaged in preventing content from being extracted from the web, the tools that archivists use inevitably get cut off as well. It's a lot of work keeping the browsertrix behaviors up to date, and ensuring that fuzzy matching works during replay. Webrecorder deserve much credit for doing this work as open source tools, but they need support: Open Collective https://opencollective.com/webrecorder or: Subscribe to their service: https://webrecorder.net/browsertrix/#get-started

I've made a career out of building, repairing, and preserving the web. Now, closer to the end of my career than the beginning, I see I haven't spent enough time learning methods for how to dismantle and disentangle the web from work and lived experience. How to practice viable and effective strategies for resisting automation & convincing decision makers when to turn things off.

@PeachMcD@union.place @skiles@carhenge.club @ThomHartmann@mstdn.social I am not disagreeing at all, but I believe calling this movement "Dark Enlightenment" gives it a veneer of philosophical credibility and depth I don't think it deserves. It is straight up fascism coupled with greed.

I'm (not so secretly) worried I might be, or have turned into, a reply-guy, as I lounge around this Saturday morning reading my fediverse stream, and responding to random posts. #uhoh

It's kind of weird to be reading about some of the reasons why people on Bluesky left Mastodon and recognizing them as things I actually like about being here. I guess that's why I am not using my Bluesky account at all...

Botnet Part 2: The Web is Broken

I guess you have all heard about the growing problem of AI companies trying to aggressively collect whatever data they can get their hands on to train their models. This has caused an explosive surge in web crawlers relentlessly hitting servers big and small. But who runs these crawlers? Turns out — it could be you!

@kategenevieve@assemblag.es the session you are leading looks really interesting too. I hope it and the rest of the series are as much fun as they look like they will be from thousands of miles away. @despens I really liked those examples of how "blurry" net artworks were transformed by incorporating documentation practices (like caching). Have you ever considered/tried configuring similar pieces to to talk to the external web through a recording proxy (e.g. pywb)? Depending on the deployment I guess there could be privacy issues related to doing that instead of caching only what is needed for the performance?

@kawaiipunk@social.coop I hope things remain chill & interesting over there! It's funny, for me, social.coop is just getting interesting, as it grapples with what it means to be a coop, not just in name, but in its actual activities and infrastructure.

@anelki@tilde.zone cook, lmk how it goes. I found it easy-ish to try out since I was already using firefox -- plugins and account/sharing etc all work the same. I like not being constantly reminded of my tabs and being able to group them into workspaces.
