In a conversation with a friend about licensing in the last week, I wondered whether we might see a resurgence of shareware licenses for binary distributions with a source available option for enterprises. (Three years ago this would have been a straight-up open source project.)

@sogrady@mastodon.social I'm curious about open source licensing in the age of AI. With models being trained with apparent disregard for copyright, how do open source developers navigate? Is there any licensing response (like AGPL but prohibiting LLMs), and does it effectively matter? Is this part of the shift toward source available?

Somehow it's easier for people to see money as a proxy for reputation and trust, as if it makes the motivation more obvious. (Spoiler: it does!)
