Twenty years of #Markdown hindsight, in one markup language: #Carve. What a "post-Markdown" standard could look like: strictly specified, secure by design, lightweight source for complex HTML/PDF targets. https://www.dereuromark.de/2026/07/13/twenty-years-of-markdown-hindsight-in-one-markup-language-carve/ #markup #documentation #opensource #php #js #rust

@mike_k@mstdn.social You are very right. Originally, it was double ,,sub,,etc, but then for consistency with the others was reduced. For proper sentences, there is also 0% change of collision, but as soon as its not that clean writing, indeed. I think we could just drop the short-form here and require the bounded form always: {,sub,} etc.

@Crell@phpc.social Do you mean by me or in general? :) You are right, that I have been intensively studying this for almost a year. Djot for example is the most sound and logical one in regards to whitespace rules (no blocks interrupt paragraphs). But it is more academic, and does not seem to lead anywhere in the next 10 years. The feedback I got was also that the world is not yet ready to move on from "worldwide standard" MD. So MD+Djot = Carve for now. Powerful, secure and moving forward. See docs.

The new #Djot for #PHP docs are online: https://php-collective.github.io/djot-php/ - including detailed syntax reference and playground. And if you are at it, check out the new "awesome djot" list: https://github.com/dereuromark/awesome-djot

🎉 #Djot (#PHP) is now officially available worldwide as #plugin in Wordpress installs: https://wordpress.org/plugins/djot-markup/
Please feel free to test it, review and rate it so people have confidence in switching over from markdown or other systems. Safer than MD.
Use in Gutenberg blocks and more.

Most notably, it now contains also useful addons like
- TOC
- Permalinks (clickable/copyable)
- Enhanced syntax (e.g. Markdown compatibility mode)
- Permissions per spec element (author vs commenter etc)

It is getting real with #Carve markup: I just shipped a claude SKILL to handle AI handling of .crv files properly, it also comes with a to-pdf convenience, seems to work really well in producing report PDFs. incl graceful degradation of graphs, mermaid, tabs and code groups etc: https://github.com/markup-carve/carve-pdf/blob/master/examples/demo.pdf Offline or online documents to really cool PDF with a single click then. IDE support across all major players. The single most powerful markdown markup so far I by far now IMO. Check it out!

Who of you have heard about Djot (as Markdown successor)?

Now: What do you think about Carve? https://markup-carve.github.io/carve/

Would be awesome to get some early feedback. More powerful than both combined, safe by design and highly extendable and customizable where needed.

#CakePHP and its modern #ORM supports now #DTO projection natively with the recent 5.3 release - https://sandbox.dereuromark.de/sandbox/dto-examples/benchmark

A powerful way to map to a type safe layer away from entities. Immutable readonly, speaking API for your templates and beyond. Without any overhead.

#Djot markup for #PHPStorm IDE etc: https://github.com/php-collective/djot-intellij Auto detects the .djot files and renderes the preview. Can use the #PHP lib to render exactly what would render out online.

@ProWiki@mastodon.social @mediawiki@wikis.world You could also look into Carve ( https://markup-carve.github.io/carve/ ) and see if that is a flexible and powerful format enough to create wiki pages. With the extendable design and tier 3 extensions I would imagine it should be. Could also compare notes on what works and is "better" than classic markdown - could also be interesting :)
