@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca It seems that all the morality inherent in the teachings of church and school, government messaging and civic tradition has been brutally unmasked as being utter hypocrisy on the part of the leaders of all our institutions. The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre. --- Frank Zappa There have been obvious signs of the hypocrisy and mendacity all along, but the decay has become increasingly blatant in the last decade or so. However, the harm has been done, and continues as people cling to a vision of civilization as a shining mirage that we hope will resolve into what we've been promised, and the dissonance of understanding the underlying modus operandi makes it a jarring experience trying to navigate the adventures of daily life. A little salt in the wound is that my parents were essentially really good people and worked hard to build that sense of generosity and empathy into our upbringing, and yet operated comfortably within the strictures of the diktats of society (for the most part), meaning that everything they taught has been forcefully binned by current practise. Ditto for myself, looking back at career and parenting. As I look at a future that is, naturally, a lot shorter than my personal past, I find that I live with a slim hope that we can all find the courage to awaken and coalesce around different directions based of the generosity and empathy that were the bedrock of Hank and Maggie's lights.

@avilewis@mstdn.ca Ok, I'm signing up. Let's make this a "pro-" election, as in pro-social good, pro-climate action, pro-natural world pro-worker, pro-citizen involvement, pro-public service, pro-commons, pro-public finance, pro-UBI/UBS, pro-public housing. There is an implied anti- for everything, but we need to start rebuilding civilization along lines that look far into the future and which will benefit all of civilization, both at home and abroad.

@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca This is a smoke and mirrors exercise that shows a lower level of debt, but also removes goods and services from the commons. Its effects are predictable when governments then pay the new owners enhanced fees plus profit to run the service, meaning that the end user actually ends up paying more. Graphic elsewhere contrasted UK's entirely privatized electrical grid where power is sold at 23p/kwh with Norway's government system, with power being provided at the equivalent of 3p/kwh. It seems pretty clear that Carney and his vrew are hip-deep in the same smelly effluvia that eventually drove Canadians to dump Mulroney and Harper. I suspect that no admin populated by the Liberals or the Conservatives could ever be immune to the lure of the trough, and, sadly, Horgan and Eby have shown no spine in breaking out of the loving embrace of the greedy and corrupt.

In BC, we're riddled with the development disease, and the rush to torpedo DRIPA is as good an indicator as one might want. It appears as though the RE developer/Miner/Logger axis will tolerate no impediment to the exploitation of absolutely everything and the sequestration in private and privileged hands of anything of worth. It seems to gall the greedy particularly that the impediment is a people who were here first and who were supposed to have been disenfranchised and subsumed into the underclass. Just ask Keith Baldrey.

@RavynWitch@kind.social We have a true lauris nobilis that was a wedding present in 1982. It was about a meter tall. We decided to see if it would survive a winter on Vancouver Island in early 1984, and it died right back to the ground, but sprouted up with seven separate shoots. It grew rapidly to a height of 10+ meters, then suffered another dieback in a particularly hard frost, this around 1997. It grew up again to more than 10 meters before once again suffering a frost kill in 2007 or so. It is presently again well over 10 meters tall, a dozen trunks up to 20 cm., houses several birds' nests, and is ready to bloom again. This is a tree that I contemplate as a friend and companion, particularly as it was a present from my paternal grandfather, chosen by my father, who planted a like tree at their place in the Gulf Islands, also in 1982, and, last I checked, it's still there, flourishing even without Hank and Maggie's tender ministrations, as, like grandfather, they have moved on. I share lots of leaves with cooks I know and use the leaves in my own culinary preparations, but mostly I love looking at the tree and letting the scent of its blooming was over me for that brief period at the end of spring.

@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca We've over-harvested for generations, and seem to be in the process of liquidating whatever's left so that the "forestry" companies can go speculate with the profits, or, as in the case of the Coleman Coup, morph into real estate developers on the way to the financial circus. https://boundaryforest.org/

Obviously not a scientist, or even an amateur astronomer, but I live surrounded by trees and back onto a significant his that obscures meteor showers and auroras when the clouds don't moot the physical features, meaning that I generally relay on the internet for all the gorgeous moons, streaks across the sky, alignments. I get to sleep, and reap the benefits of other people's diligence, for which I am ever grateful. And goats...

@zazzoo @leftylabourtech @pluralistic It would take patience and forethought to come up with a successful solution to the "social" networking paradigm we've allowed to develop for the worst reasons by some really doozie bad actors. Seems to be that FN wisdom relies on patience, long-term thinking and the ability to operate in the midst of unresolved conflict (or so John Ralston Saul informed me in his discussion of FN culture being a third pillar of Canadian culture). I don't know how much of that Kinew can bring into a centuries-old governing canon, especially in the context of a panicked population (at least the part that isn't so diverted and apathetic as to not see the issue), It's not a dance I would want to do, particular given how openly the titans of tech have allied themselves with the advocates of authorianism.

@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca Motion of censure passed by a wide margin, Barnier is out. This is not chaos, it is the workings, however fragile, of democracy as the NFP won a plurality in the July elections, whereas Barnier's party polled at 6%, and everything that Barnier passed was at the bidding of, and with the connivance of the RN. The NFP had proposed a series of budget amendments that would have brought the deficit under the 3% of GDP as "required" in EU regs, and was fully costed, said measures having the fatal flaw of insisting that the wealthiest and international corporations pay up their share. All were blocked by the alliance of Macronist parties and the RN. Note that Marine LePen really wants the immunity of being President of the Republic and the immunity it confers from the EU charges likely to sink any political future should she be convicted, a likely outcome. In that, she shares that quality of being under scrutiny with the President of Korea, ThePresident of the US, and the Prime Minister of Israel. 1/

@courtcan@mastodon.social This is a very interesting and engaging observation for me, almost halfway through my seventies, and sometimes reflecting back on past decades, events and random moments. There were times when I got feedback from those around me that I was doing something right, something wrong and I have always had some preconceived notions of direction and progress, but I went from some naive questioning to a gathering sense that there were never the guiedlines, meaningful signposts, that I got from greater society as the accepted wisdom shifted, turned over, evolved and sometimes dropped off a cliff with little or no notice and with little or nothing to take its place. Mostly, it has been good enough, and I'm thankful for the tools I've had at the time, but I fear deeply for the future.

@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca /2 Funds are on hand to run the country until the beginning of March without the intercession of the Assembly. If Macron chooses to ignore the results of July and appoint someone other than a rep from the NFP, then there will likely be another blockage. If the NFP gets the chance to govern, their program comes into effect and the citizenry gets to decide whether that programme is worthy of continuation. Should Macron resign, I believe that an election must be held within 30 days to choose a new president. I'm not sure whether the new president can then call new new legislative elections. Given that we have had at least five decades of neoliberal trickledown economics (Macron is a shining example) that have concentrated wealth in a small minority and beggared public services, it might be time to try something else. Macron is fighting like crazy to ensure that no one else gets a chance.

A different, and very thorough, take on UBI, though this piece won't convince PP and his cabal that UBI is a good thing. It's reinforcing to see that at least a few people are having these thoughts.
