some pretty bleak numbers here: Canada's wealthiest demographic receives the largest proportion of government assistance.

"It’s not just that they typically have no dependents, live in paid-off homes and carry little debt, though all of that helps. Their well-being is also untethered from Canada’s anemic wage growth. People 55 and older make up less than one-third of the population but, as of 2023, they owned 49 per cent of the country’s real estate by value, 62 per cent of bank deposits, 72 per cent of mutual funds and other investments and 75 per cent of stocks. The value of all those assets has soared."

"Many do not feel rich. They consider themselves middle class, because they own the things middle-class Canadians once took for granted: a home, a car, perhaps a cottage or a boat. But those once-ordinary markers of stability are now available only to a privileged minority."

wow I hate this! hey kids, don't worry about learning to proofread, edit, and revise your own writing while you are in HIGH SCHOOL. Gemini (a paid product controlled by an ad company) can do that for you! Don't bother brainstorming ideas for a project - that's a thing of the past now that LLMs can "think". Creatively translating information for a class into song or illustration? Sounds like a drag, the LLM can do it. Yay learning! https://www.ocdsb.ca/news-events/news/post/new-ai-resources-for-students#ontario #ottawa #noai #parenting

If I am ever killed in the streets by a driver while I’m on foot or on my bike, please make it known that I would consider it spitting on my grave for flags to be lowered by the same government that took away speed cameras, that fights common sense traffic calming, that fights to dismantle and prevent better infrastructure for vulnerable road users.

A government that encourages, even guarantees, more deaths of kids walking to school, of people on bikes, old ladies in parking lots, and crossing guards forced to become martyrs.

@aredridel@kolektiva.social I was recently asked (by an insurance provider, adding insult to injury) to rate how each of several symptoms have been recently on a scale of 1 to “the worst it’s ever been”. They asked no further questions about say, how bad each symptom has been for me in the past, or how it affects me now or how much my supposed level 10 may have affected me…

A friend asked me today "wait, what's the ethical issue you have with LLMs?" and hoo boy is there no way to concisely provide that info without sounding like a raging conspiracy theorist. It's all pretty well documented and supported by fact, it just sure sounds like it shouldn't be! If that were true wouldn't everyone know it and also be horrified instead of enamored with these cool new toys?? Wouldn't it!??

A friend from a book club we were both in back in Lincoln for several years wrote a book. Based on the strength of one essay of hers I’d read reflecting on her relationships with some larger than average penises, I was eager to read more.

Wow, I am not disappointed. This book easily flies beyond “thing I am reading because I know the author” and is rapidly rising towards “favorite collection of essays I have ever read”

It’s funny, it’s heartfelt and poignant, and it’s quite well written.

@lzg@mastodon.social I’ve been chewing on this and I guess I don’t feel like my own moral condemnation needs a theory of change attached. I’m ok holding a niche position on my ethics (insomuch as I can do so and remain employed, which: TBD) and LLM use isn’t even the first one I’ve held (see: abolition type stuff and YIMBYism- two less common beliefs even less commonly held by the same person at once!)

My moral distaste isn’t really affected by recognizing use cases that I accept are genuinely useful- it still feels bad to me!

Vegans (at least some) definitely know or are familiar with the idea that bacon tastes really good to most people. And (at least some) vegans are fine sticking strongly to their own values, and thinking in their heads that others would be better to do things their way, but aren’t necessarily proselytizing at every potluck because they understand that’s a quick road to not being invited back.

@phillmv I think you laid out your case pretty clearly. If someone reads it and concludes they are ultimately fine on team Hamburger Helper, well, that’s still useful info for the rest of us in the Rails community about how to move forward.

@MarkAsser@beige.party If you apply in person in Washington DC in a particular time frame, you’ll get a passport with Trump’s face on it. If you apply for a passport or passport renewal anywhere in the US at any time from last November to an indefinite point in the future, and you’re a trans person who has legally changed gender markers on all your other documents, you will get a passport showing only your assigned sex at birth, and thus will be at risk of greater violence and mistreatment whenever you need to use your passport. That is pretty grotesque, too.

"The budget also allocates $41 million over three years for a provincewide school resource officer program, after Bill 33 was passed in November. Ottawa’s largest school board cut the program in 2021 after racialized and 2SLGBTQ+ students raised concerns about the presence of police officers in schools."

"(In January 2025, Ottawa police launched a new program assigning one officer to each of Ottawa’s four districts, but not to specific schools.)"

Hey look, it's provincial money for Ottawa transit that could be immediately re-allocated in the proposed budget without harming anyone (and in fact, while keeping schools safer for marginalized kids)!

@eljojo thanks - the angle you’re going for I think on gender, which I’ve heard labeled as like “gender nihilism” or “gender abolition”, I’m broadly pretty sympathetic to! But I basically don’t talk about it outside of contexts where I can be confident some underlying values are shared among the discussers, and where I have the space to make the nuances of what I think about it clear. Because I’m totally with you - if there were no gender roles at all, that sounds great to me. I want people of any sex assigned at birth to act or dress however they want and that to be .. unremarkable, basically. But I’m also a pragmatist, and no amount of me not wanting to be cast in a gender role (or any other social category) will make it so no one I encounter slots me into one whether they make it explicit or not. I also have heard people say that they have some internal sense of gender that really matters to them when others recognize it & get it right. I believe these people about what feels good to them and support their own autonomy over how they choose to pursue that. Always. With all the anti-trans hate in the world, which goes beyond discrimination or stigma to very serious and life-altering (or ending) violence, even towards genocide and an attempt to eradicate people who live differently than their assigned gender at birth is “supposed to”- I endeavor to be very, very clear when I talk about living beyond gender roles that I’m on the side of people who choose to do so, always, even when they do it differently than I might choose to, or if they ultimately land on being happy to be seen by others as one of a binary gender system I’d personally be fine doing away with. But again I really think this entire aspect of the discussion is really quite tangential to what the essay I shared said- it feels like the cause-and-effect got reversed in your read from what was actually there.

@eljojo when I have short dyed-blue hair, I get recognized as part of a different category than when I had long blonde hair and dressed more femininely. It's not "man" exactly, but it's still a social group I am recognized as being part of - "blue hair and pronouns" or queer or countercultural or whatever. I like being seen that way, so I keep the short hair (sometimes blue) and dress/accessorize in a way that people often recognize as queer. In the past I tried harder to be more what people expect "straight cis woman" to look like, and I was never super great at it, and the styles I wore felt slightly wrong to me; I was never all that comfortable when I tried to wear what I thought was expected of me at things like formal family pictures or a fancy dinner. I feel better when my style is more 'me', and I feel less like I'm wearing a costume of what a woman is supposed to be. I prefer feeling that way! You could say that is changing my appearance, but it's not like I was born wearing a 20-sometings adult woman's fashions, accessories, and hairstyles - I picked all that stuff out over time, too, and tried it for a while, and now I pick other stuff. Changing how people treat me isn't really the goal for me, it's feeling more "me", but the result is similar (though often somewhat subtle): people assign me a different category in their head without thinking about it, even if we're not directly interacting. I get slotted as "queer probably-woman, maybe they/them" instead of "straight cis woman". Or on the odd hardware store trip, I get called "sir", or maybe "sir uh.. ma'am?" and all that is fine with me, really.

@eljojo I am not really sure how I would know if someone is queer based not on their looks or attitude or the things they do or their beliefs really tbh! I don’t really have a sense of what queer could be outside some combination of those things.

@eljojo yeah I think we’re just not really on the same page about what the essay was trying to say- the points you’re raising would make an interesting discussion for another time but don’t seem super connected to what was actually stated or what I am saying either really, so not sure discussing more here will be super fruitful.
