I want to be inside the brain of someone who’s so gadget brained they are excited about Microsoft hardware announcements.

Like wtf is wrong with you that it all doesn’t send you running away screaming?

@AtanasE@mastodon.social I always just fix it. Getting support from anyone higher up is a waste of time at nearly every job I’ve ever had and I’m generally rewarded more for just doing things without asking permission first. It’s also the only way nearly anything meaningful gets done as generally whatever roadmap your leadership rolls out in Q1 is either too conservative to provide you with interesting things to do or so aggressive you’re going to lose 40% of your staff by mid-year.

Snowflake doesn't do anything a well designed and provisioned postgresql database doesn't do. As a platform its such a gigantic waste of money and resources.

This is frustrating.

I built extensive monitoring and alerting procedures for the majority of our data platform.

So today we got a slew of failures overnight.

Everyone scrambles to figure out the issues and do nothing but spin out with zero clue what’s happening.

Every single member of the team has put a rule on the alerts so they never see them.

Then when issues come up if Claude can’t fix it for them they have no idea because they aren’t looking at the alerts that tell them exactly what broke, when, and why. Because they forgot the alerts exist.

Just grabbed a cheapish rowing machine online. Can't stay healthy doing any of my normal routines at this point. Have to remove basically all impact from my workouts unfortunately. At least for now.

Its a weird spiral. I've been injured so much and so frequently in the past 3 years or so that I'm now more prone to injury. It's awful.

Then there was verbally berating a staffer for being slightly in frame during a video call she was having in the middle of a kitchen. She also verbally and physically abused her ex-husband. The details of which are in public court documents.

@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org @lor@goingdark.social I have never let user acceptance affect my recommendation for best practices. Ultimately I don't care about the argument you're making. I'm not going to stop recommending Gekko browsers over Chromium and having the conversations. They'll know that I use something different, respect my position, and possibly give it a try because they recognize that I know and understand more than they do. People in my personal and professional life look to me for tech leadership and I'm not going to abdicate that responsibility because I'm powerless to switch the entire world off of Chromium at once without anyone knowing.

@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org Yeah, sure, ok. In a world where my choices are Chrome or a Chrome based browser I'll choose a Gekko based browser every time, even Firefox regardless of AI. I'll turn it off. I'll use a fork without it. Whatever. Using Chrome is fucking stupid.

@mmiasma@mastodon.sdf.org @josh0@babka.social hah, I worked in a basement for what I came to realize was organized crime (I left after 6 months) and everything in the racks had to be mounted a couple feet off the floor because the parking lot would leak into the server room during very heavy rain. We had multiple sump pumps on marine batteries that would pump the water up and outside where it likely just drained back in eventually.

@mmiasma@mastodon.sdf.org @josh0@babka.social I am having a hard time remembering when I've detonated production on my own. I've definitely had coding errors that led to permutations of incorrect or misleading data over the years though. But I was a DBA for twenty years. It was my first and only job to be prepared where others were not and to always be able to get the company back to usually within 15-60 minutes of where we were when whatever catastrophe happened.

@mmiasma@mastodon.sdf.org It is wild that people turn this shit loose in their VPC, though... ...Sounds like before any LLM was ever used that PocketOS had abysmal design, development, and deployment procedures which created many gaps that were super easy for an agent with too many permissions to exploit. How could running against your staging environment ever impact production like this unless you were already vulnerable to this exact scenario through human mistakes? A lot of these "LLMs deleted my entire production environment" posts are just CYA from company leadership that their infrastructure wasn't a steaming pile of shit to begin with.

Finally found a torrent of Nine Inch Noise at Coachella since I was too dense to setup a capture upstairs and just watched live in my living room. Maybe one of my favorite NIN performances ever. I can't put it over Lights in the Sky since I actually saw that live... but this overall performance plus the remixed tracks plus Mariqueen singing backing vocals was just amazing.

@billinkc@beige.party The best manager I ever had offered me a job in Redmond in 2017. Even had me come out to the campus during PASS that year and hang out for the day. The review process and forced attrition (plus Seattle weather, ugh) basically nixed the entire thing for me, even though I'd have had nothing to worry about with him. Knowing that my life had already imploded once by then, (and another time since) I didn't want a bad year or two to lead me to a job search on top of it.

@eldersea@expressional.social @danirabbit@mastodon.online No. Honestly Steyer is the least bad regardless of his bank account. At least there’s no videos of him abusing his campaign staff and refusing to answer easy follow-up questions in interviews. Katie Porter is so disappointing. I think everyone had huge expectations for her but she’s ruined a lot of her credibility over the past year with honestly shocking and weird behavior.

I wrote a small utility 4 years ago for a group of very non-technical users at work. It basically just automates some file moving and renaming operations among other things for them. Stuff that would take literal hours if done by hand. Forgot all about it. Got a message this morning from one of the users asking for new features. Apparently they've been using this the entire time. I had no idea. They want it expanded to take on some new functions. Pretty wild. I had forgot I even did this and its apparently been a crucial tool for many many people for years, just quietly working without issue.

roughly $1300 to resurrect my behemoth server and get it into the rack. Not sure I want to do that just yet. Rack mount cases are so expensive. And so are PSUs that can run multiple GPUs.

@timbray@cosocial.ca @virtuous_sloth@cosocial.ca I bought a used radeon 7900 off of ebay. I have a very old dual xeon supermicro motherboard with 256GB of DDR3 that it’s installed in. I can run much larger models than 30b but that’s the cutoff of for what I consider a close parity for my use cases between open source models (I use Qwen) and commercial ones like Opus, Sonnet, or GPT. If you have a GPU with 16GB of VRAM and 32GB of system RAM you can have a decent experience for some use cases. I use it primarily as my Joplin interface for notes and task planning with OpenClaw, and for scripting/prototyping with Claude Code.
