@magnetic_tape@infosec.exchange @janamarie@mystical.garden @coldclimate@hachyderm.io I did the conversion of a Lumix GH2 using www.lifepixel.com replacement glass and instructions. I've stripped and repaired my iPhone 4s back in the day, but found that stripping a DSLR (well, non SLR System Camera) do be a slight step up from that. Take time and concentrate! I've got a bunch of vis, color, IR only and UV only filters, but found that even the best glass filters for UV-only still have significant leak at IR, and the sensor is so damned sensitive to IR that you need the Astro type Baader Venus filter to really lock out everything but UV. And that is not-so-cheap. But you do get to see the invisible freckles on the skin and Sunblock creme looks like shoe shine.

@inthehands - but actually it was the product range development (quiet computers that require noisy storage supplements might as well not be quiet) and the constant software rot (media storage and management that became increasingly closed, continuously lost features, and inserted AI slop metadata to my photos) that drove me away from the platform even before that.

@kevinrenskers - I just switched my daily driver from mac to linux. I switched from Windows to Mac when the Mac mini first came out. Mine was the first one sold in Germany (out of a first-day shipment of six :-) For Messages, consider Signal. Similar integration on mobile and desktop: text, call, and video. My big hurdle was Photos. Digikam works for me now. Still, some things don't work, yet. Bit once I figure it out, they will. I've felt for years that macs have been deteriorating ever faster, with no solution in sight. Feels good now.

@DrSaucy@sfba.social @oantolin@mathstodon.xyz - no, they were never that expensive before. The astronomical prices started after digitalization. In fact, the prices were in the low to mid double digits because that fit with the general cost of education, which was much lower. We went on strike when tuition aka "semester fee" was introduced - 50€ at the time, later deemed unconstitutional and repealed.

@magnetic_tape@infosec.exchange @janamarie@mystical.garden @coldclimate@hachyderm.io - pretty much that. After switching to digital the first "real" camera was the Lumix GH2. I had chosen that because it was one of the first to do real FullHD video as well as very decent pictures, and the 14-140 lens is a charm for travel. That became my second camera around Covid, and the GH2 turned out to one of very few to do "clean HDMI", so it could be used as a top notch webcam with any of the then-brand-new HDMI grabber dongles. Long story short, I now have, ahem, several GH2 bodies flying around, and one became Full Spectrum. I settled on having a step-up filter adapter from my main lenses to 77mm, and then filters at - or adapters to - these 77mm. So now I'm playing with filters, pics, timelapses, ffmpeg, and thinking of wardriving around the neighborhood with the IR sensitive camera to see where surveillance cameras have the IR illumination on. Because my Unifi garden cam sure as hell is like a beacon in the night for Full Spectrum IR.

@marcoarment@mastodon.social - this has made my kid's school rock-concert-level performances so much more enjoyable. I can pick out individual instruments, voices. I still have very acute hearing and very high frequency range (14kHz), but beginning "old age" type voice processing difficulties in noisy, chatty environments. No more pain from high-quality, but far too loud speaker system. No more ringing in the ears for hours afterwards. I feel much less stressed, only realizing now that it's the loud in loud environments that stresses me out so much. Cast members say that the white with bling AirPods makes it easier to spot me in the audience from on-stage ;-/

@MissingThePt@mastodon.social - the US of A will still be liable to refund much of that. So foreign supplier previously sold import for X. Wirh tariffs, X+25%. Supplier made US customer pay the 25% by raising prices, got same or similar profit. Now the 25% will be refunded to the foreign supplier "because: illegal". US feds will have to pay the 25% by raising taxes on US taxpayers since the money went to genious ideas and is "gone". That is, not the rich, only the taxpayers.pay. Again. Double whammy.

@altomare@oldbytes.space - thanks! Apparently a 1903 treadle. This has rabbit hole potential. However, like many similar rabbit holes, I've found no simple guide to actually identifying the model. It is just assumed you know; or that the technical terms are common knowledge. No source showing all models and where to look for the differences. One website that shows screenshots of a video where the whole household and workshop are shown, but the machines themselves are visually lost in the images. Meh.

@ieeespectrum - the problem is that people who hear the "pedestrian sounds" also hear the vehicles tire sounds. The people regularly startled by EVs are almost always deaf, oblivious elders who also don't hear bicyclists loudly ringing their bells, or in fact diesel trucks right next to them. It's not their fault they can't hear well. Very often it is their fault that they are totally self-absorbed and have no situational awareness. And a habit of unnecessarily staying put in the middle of any path of traffic - be it pedestrian, bike, or automobile. And that is often very much a nuisance. Beyond that are senior citizens who are plenty busy just existing - but the pedestrian noises are honestly not going to help them, either. The only thing the noises succeed in is to annoy people trying to sleep in quiet, suburban areas at night.

Traurig.
