I've seen a job description in the spacial/cybersecurity field for which I'm theoretically a perfect fit and this makes me 10x more enthusiastic than I've been in the last 6 months.
No idea if it will land (it's an employee position and I'd rather have freelance) but at least it means that I'm recovering.
Look, I'm not extremely fond of what AI's doing to our society or our planet, but calling it "glorified matrix multiplication" is a very strong indicator that you have no idea what's going on since 2022.
No one is helping the societal debate by denying that 2026 LLM-based AI is extremely capable and dangerous when left autonomously taking decisions that impact the physical world.
My problem is that I never finish any project. When doing something, I get distracted by something else that needs attention, then something else. That's how 2 days ago, when cleaning my driveway, I started removing the broken car ramp that goes to the garage, then uncloged the pile of years of goo and mud that accumulated next to the garage. When powercleaning, I started cleaning the wall, noticed it was collapsing, so I took the old concrete I had to redo the joint. Then went to the shop because I was out of concrete. Then this morning noticed the first concrete was too old and I had to redo everything, then when I started from the bottom, saw that the back of the wall was bad and that I wouldn't have enough concrete. But I didn't want to go shopping because the sun is very bright and I'm charging my EV. So since I had the power washer in hand, I cleaned my car, then a bit of the garbage bin at the entrance, then the driveway that goes to the door and that's full of mud between the cracks. Then realize just this part is a full-week project.
Not 5 days ago I was complaining to my doctor that I couldn't rest despite not having worked for 3 months, guess what, rest mode does not exist when you have ADHD.
As I started watching "The Good Place", it swift slowly from a pop-comedy with light notions of philosophy into something that really explores the question of what it is to be a good person.
yipie, I finally understood how 3D->2D projection works and built my first spinning cube. It even has Z-mapping
I don't have only good stories from working at Sony, but one day I was reviewing a chat app for TV, reported a medium-priority finding that the linking-to-particular-social-media feature had privacy concerns, and they killed the feature the next day without any arguing.
The Sony TV never had built in microphones or cameras and aren't bundled with spyware other than the standard Google TV ones.
This is the polar opposite of LG's behavior.
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net
@lcamtuf@infosec.exchange as long as you don't make more than 10 predictions, it's safe enough.
My telescope imaging system takes shape. It's very close to have 100% of all the features I expect from such a tool. First 90% are done, 90% remaining.
A question I ask myself often when seeing one of these projects, is "why do you hate your users that much that you're using sourceforge to host them?" SF is trash and there are at least 3 better alternatives that aren't github.
"Math proves AI cannot evolve independently"
Very interesting research that proves that an LLM alone converges to a fixed point when looping on it own output, something that most people knew without a formal proof years ago.
But the commentary article below totally misses the point, in a very similar way to how evolution deniers say "it's impossible to obtain a clock by mixing particles of glass and iron and letting them form a clock by chance".
Both are totally right in the premises, but they're criticizing an incomplete model of what's happening back stage. Evolution has a selection step, and LLMs have access to computing power (i.e. writing and writing programs) that may select the statistically rare but useful LLM enhancements.

welp, the project worked so well with simulated devices, why is it breaking now that I test it in the wild?
I just had the weirdest client call from Orange (supposedly). The guy knew a lot about my subscriptions (Internet and phone from two companies merging) but didn't know how much I paid for each, made very weird comments about the new modem I'm supposed to receive, like that it switchs to "satellite connection" when there's a problem on the cable and such.
My software now takes pictures pretty well even if many important features are still missing.
Pas pour critiquer, mais on finance toutes ces choses en achetant très légalement sur Amazon, en roulant en Tesla ou en utilisant un Sodastream. L'argument éthique est très très faible.

Sometimes I read about astronomy professionals implementing network RPC protocols and I just cringe...
https://ascom-standards.org/AlpacaDeveloper/Async.htm
It's en vogue to use an asynchronous operation by "spinning off a thread" in which you call the method, then repeatedly poll the completion property until it becomes "complete". Meanwhile in your main logic flow you do other things that don't require the operation to have completed. Finally you come back and look when you need to know if it has completed before you can move on. Well all that time your spun-off thread is mindlessly polling for completion before you even care! It's bad form to create traffic for the device and the net with useless polling for async completion. Would it make more sense to kick off the operation with the method call, then go on about your other business, then when you need it to be done, check to see if it has completed right there? If not, now you're stuck and can't press on anyway, so loop right there waiting for it to complete. You may end up never waiting at all.
Their version of "asynchronous" is a cheap version of synchronous start and end of operations + polling + guilt-tripping devs using polling as a strategy because they designed an "asynchronous" protocol that doesn't even have callbacks.
JSON over websocket would do better
Now it has dual-camera support! No synchronized dithering yet tho.
"No ChatGPT, 'Digital Playground' would be a terrible name for an educational electronic kit. The name is already taken, research it."
the joy of AI-based security research
The neat part with satellite constellations nowadays is that you don't need star maps anymore, they draw the equatorial lines in the sky
