@gintoxicating Used to be Gandi before they sold to PE; then moved to Porkbun for a bit (who seem great), and finally trying out Hover (tucows reseller) and a few others as part of my de-USA-ifying journey. Still haven't settled on just one yet, TBQH.

@antonio106@ottawa.place If it's people that you follow, you can export those as a CSV and then import them with the "Merge" option, so it doesn't overwrite everything. If it's people that follow you, I believe (though will double-check) that it will merge into the current account (i.e. not erase the set of people that follow you). More details here: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#move Posts can't be moved between instances right now, unfortunately, so there's not much you can do there. Though, you can download them under the export page so you have a copy of them, and then view it with a variety of archive viewers. I haven't tried any of them, but one I've seen mentioned before is https://purr.neocities.org/about/ (the export page is under Preferences -> Import and Export in the sidebar)

@mWare@ottawa.place Hah, yeah, should have been more specific; sorry about that! 😅 I'm in the market for a small (4-6 port) desktop or under-desk switch that can do 10G back to my rack (copper preferably but I have a conduit and can run something else). I run Brocade now which I'll likely never get more of, so I'm good with Mikrotik (used before for smaller things) and UniFi (though I don't have an existing setup and probably don't want to 100% migrate over to that ecosystem). No need for PoE though I'd get it if I had the option. Also if you have any small 1U rackmounts that are cheap and/or low-power, I have a little TP-Link taped to my rack now for complicated reasons and would love to replace that with something actually rackmount. 1G is fine, no PoE or management necessary.

@lra007_@ottawa.place Yeah, that’s a great list and where I first found out about Hover. I moved one domain to Hover, one to Rebel, and both are fine? I think the Hover web interface is a bit frustrating, so I’m probably not going to stick with them. I also haven’t yet found a Canadian registrar that supports passkeys for security yet, which was one of the main selling points for Porkbun. (in fairness, I haven’t had a lot of time to look)

@britt@mstdn.games I don't know if you're looking for a managed host or a VPS/VM provider, but if you're looking for managed hosting I've heard good things about https://fedihost.co/ - based in Montreal!
FediHost - Managed Fediverse Hosting
FediHost.co

FediHost - Managed Fediverse Hosting

FediHost is a managed fediverse hosting service. With a couple of clicks you can be up and running with your own Mastodon or Peertube instance.

@seeteegee@social.afront.org @leigh@ottawa.place Yeah, I’m hoping to write up a bit more about that! The funding question is an easy one: we’re paying for it ourselves for now, out of pocket. If it becomes popular enough to need to expand the hosting, we’re going to register a nonprofit and transfer the domain and servers to it, and look into taking donations for costs.

@TCadd@techhub.social @leigh@ottawa.place It's not too bad right now, though I'll know more after a few weeks. My current estimate is less than $100/month, though.

@iani@ruby.social @leigh@ottawa.place Not *too* bad, but definitely not trivial for how we chose to do it. We're running all the components (Mastodon, Sidekiq workers, Postgres, Redis, etc.) on dedicated hardware in OVH Montreal–nothing managed, for now. I also wanted to make sure that we had proper monitoring (Prometheus) and regular encrypted backups before launch. All in all... about a week and a half or so of work in the evenings?

@gnomon@mastodon.social @leigh@ottawa.place We’re using AWS SES for email, since you can use their Canadian region. It’s not a Canadian company, but at least all the data is stored in Canada (though admittedly, who knows what the recipient mailserver is doing)

@hfinyow@mstdn.ca @leigh@ottawa.place You can have multiple accounts; I know that some apps make that easier than others. The "Toot!" account is one that I use and makes this pretty easy: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/toot/id1229021451 The other option is to "migrate" between servers; your followers will move with you to the new server, and the old username will stick around with a message saying "this person moved over here". Check out what my old profile looks like, before I migrated here: @andrewd@octodon.social There's more information available here, as well: https://joinfediverse.wiki/Moving_instances
