From Dublin, Ireland
Living in Málaga, Spain

I joined the Fediverse originally because I was curious about the #openstreetmap instance, then found lots of interesting things about my other interests such as #photography, #hiking, and travelling by #train.

All these interests are also reflected in my photos on Flickr and Pixelfed.

I had a personal website/blog way back in the 00s, and will definitely certainly 100% get around to reviving it some day soon. Soonish.

I know I'm far from the only OSM contributor to succumb to the lure of "fixing" things in Wikimedia Commons and related projects. I was pushed over the edge by the lack of photos of the Málaga Metro. Going out and taking photos to fill the gaps turned out to be the easy bit, compared to sorting out categories and wikidata links/labels. But I got there in the end, and now every station has at least 3 photos. Screenshot is the OsmAnd photo display for Paraninfo station. #OpenStreetMap #malaga

Today, Día de Andalucía, the station should be even busier than a normal Saturday morning. But the concourse is almost deserted. I never thought I'd feel nostalgic for the queues for the x-ray machines. Renfe does offer a bus service to connect to high speed trains at Antequera Santa Ana. It's also possible to get to that station by Media Distancia train, but Renfe doesn't like to publicise that - I guess there is no spare capacity to absorb long distance passengers.

Did I run a whole half marathon just to take advantage of being able to clock up 5 new kilometres in Wandrer.earth, by running on streets closed to traffic?

No. That would be crazy.

Did I deliberately run close to the central reservations, so that Wandrer would be able to tell the route apart from parallel footpaths I've already covered? Well... maybe.

Renfe's new tool for visualising the real-time position of long and medium distance trains is grimly fascinating.

It's 10.30 a.m. and in the area of this map covering Algeciras, Málaga, Granada, and Almería - an area with well over 3 million inhabitants - only 5 trains are in motion (and only 1 of those is on time).

The tool doesn't display substitute bus services - there are probably a few on the road north of Málaga, which is still cut off from the high speed network.

@j3j5@mastodon.uy @astro_jcm@mastodon.online It took me an embarrassingly long time to clearly grasp that the Chilean city where my in-laws live is located to the west, not the east, of Ruta 5. After all, the highway was on my right when I looked at the sun... That was before smartphones - I'd like to think that these days I would notice the discrepancy with maps on my phone more quickly. Not that I am any kind of astrophotographer, but I think it broadly applies to anyone interested in outdoor photography.

@mdione@en.osm.town @amapanda@en.osm.town As I've been thoroughly nerdsniped I may as well keep going. Same query as above, but specifically for place=hamlet and place=locality. This confirms that Galicia really does have an unusually high hamlet density. So do Brittany and parts of Bavaria and southern Poland. Separately, Spain seems to have a roughly NW to SE gradient for locality. I have no real explanation for that. Eastern France and Slovakia are also prominent here.

Renfe has seen the future, and it's buses. Lots of them. A whole new subsidiary dedicated to providing bus transport to people who really wanted to be on a train.

@cycling_on_rails@mastodon.social @alberto_cottica@mastodon.green The timetable is available on the Renfe website. Currently it leaves at 13:40 and takes just over 8 hours. Note that you need to enter "FEVE-León" as the departure station, not "León". Renfe expects you to know this. I think there is shuttle bus to La Asunción - Universidad where the actual train starts, but I'm not sure. As it happens there are works on the line right now, which makes looking for info even trickier, but they are due to finish this week.

@jpoesen I've only just remembered that my Mastodon profile has a photo of a high speed train crossing a viaduct in Álora in happier times.

@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com The blank spaces not just in Bosnia but also southern Croatia stand out. It looks like there were just a couple of short lines around Split that didn't connect to anything else?

@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com Reading up on it now, I see that the Lika line was not completed until 1925 - I hadn't appreciated that it was so late, well after there was a line through Herzegovina as far south as Trebinje as shown on the map (even if that was narrow gauge). Also interesting to see the dense network between Timișoara and Belgrade.

@gedankenstuecke@scholar.social It's also interesting to look at the type of place mapped. The most common in Argentina is "plot" - not something I have seen at the top of the list elsewhere. In Chile it's "islet", not surprising given the geography. Compared to Europe, use of "place=locality" (for named unpopulated places) is very low. @richlv@mastodon.social @amapanda@en.osm.town @mdione@en.osm.town

@mcliquid Garmin Connect does use Google Maps, maybe that is what @peteorrall is referring to? But I don't think that really matters, you can view your tracks in whatever app/platform suits you. As implied by other answers, I think a key question is whether you need some kind of map on the watch. For my purposes an old Forerunner 245 is enough, I only use the map for recording, not navigation.

@gedankenstuecke@scholar.social @richlv@mastodon.social @amapanda@en.osm.town So here is southern South America on a similar scale to the original Europe map. Not surprisingly density is generally much lower, likely for the reasons @mdione@en.osm.town mentioned. No great surprise in Chile, with the densely populated Santiago/Valparaíso regions and the Central Valley south of that showing up. In Argentina, Buenos Aires is less prominent than I expected. I guess Neuquen and Jujuy (and Tacna in Peru) have particularly dedicated mappers?

@mdione@en.osm.town I think Spain in general reflects the density of place names imported from IGN data. Galicia seems to have a very high density of hamlets in particular, many with tiny populations (zero in some cases). In contrast, hamlets are rather far apart in the data around me in Malaga. It doesn't surprise me that if one part of Spain stands out, it would be Galicia, which I have often seen described as having very different settlement patterns from most of Spain. @amapanda@en.osm.town

@kikebenlloch@mastodon.social Very interesting. If I get time I'd like to look into a few of your points in OSM data, such as where those plots came from (in Malaga the only Cadastre imports I have seen are of buildings). Also all municipalities are mapped, but there seems to be a different tagging practice outside Galicia. I'm not sure if you saw the OSM wiki guidelines for mapping "Núcleos de Población" in Spain as a whole, which inciude some population criteria. @amapanda@en.osm.town @aarbrk@mstdn.mx @BUnicycling@mastodon.ie @ifrit@masto.ai

@mdione@en.osm.town @amapanda@en.osm.town I though Ireland might have relatively high density of place=locality due to the thorough mapping of townlands. But that barely even registers compared to Galicia which is apparently in a whole other league of granular naming. The two screenshots are at the same scale. I used centroids for the Irish townlands as the Galicia localities are nodes.

@mdione@en.osm.town Those imports date from long before I was involved in OSM. I'm not sure if any of the difference in place density shown for Spain is due to artefacts of the import process, or if it all relates directly to IGN data (which would suggest that some regions really do have far more named places than others). As I mentioned, I could believe Galicia being unusual, but I'm a little surprised at the density in the northern Meseta (between Madrid and Leon, say). @amapanda@en.osm.town

@richlv@mastodon.social Well, all kinds of names with a place tag. It would include mountains tagged as natural=peak for example - but the area around a peak might be referred to by the same name and end up as a separate place=locality tag. Many of them are officially catalogued as "paraje" in Spanish, which doesn't really have a good English equivalent but is something like "area in the countryside". @mdione@en.osm.town @amapanda@en.osm.town

@aarbrk@mstdn.mx @amapanda@en.osm.town That makes sense, it's broadly what I had in mind but had forgotten the specific term. I wonder if some of these names are similar in nature to the field names in Ireland that @BUnicycling@mastodon.ie has written about - the very small area suggest some of them might be, or at least may have started that way. I think field names mapped in Ireland have generally been tagged on an object representing the field itself, rather than with generic place tags, so wouldn't show up in this query.

@gedankenstuecke@scholar.social Go on, run the query for Argentina. In fact, run it for all of South America. You know you want to! Otherwise I'll have to do it when I wake up tomorrow... (I genuinely am interested, Chile and Argentina happen to be the only two countries outside Europe where I could relate the results to a little bit of personal experience). @richlv@mastodon.social @mdione@en.osm.town @amapanda@en.osm.town
