The Third Place Didn’t Vanish. We Zoned It Out, Priced It Out, and Drove Past It. The concept of "third places," introduced by Ray Oldenburg, highlights social spaces outside home and work, crucial for community connection. Unfortunately, American urban planning has systematically eliminated these places, leading to rising loneliness. Solutions include creating walkable, mixed-use environments that prioritize free access to genuine public spaces, fostering social interaction and belonging. http://transitsleuth.com/2026/07/21/the-third-place-didnt-vanish/

RE: https://mas.to/@carnage4life/116949059940804954 Saw this coming from miles away. Salesforce has been, from its inception, an overly expensive and overly complex system just for “CRM” work and it’s always impressed me they pulled it off for this long!

Ok, I'm going to rant for a moment.

If you're setting up calls and sending an AI "person" to talk to me on the phone there are very few ways you don't get black listed/blocking/refusing business by me immediately. EVERYBODY else should start doing this too, it is unacceptable.

All of these are based on really basic rules of honorable human interactions: don't lie, don't deceive, and be kind, don't assume what other's are from or dealing with.

Over the last bunch of years there has been a massive consolidation of Social Media - largely from Twitter & Facebook (FB? maybe not) - to a dispersion of other options. Twitter is left with basically trash accounts and low-visibiility with almost zero productive conversations actually happening. But still cropping up every now and again. Truth social if you're a sychophant of Trumps. 🧵 1/3

For developer advocacy though, I've no idea. Where are the ideal places these days if you're pushing to do developer advocacy work? Reddit? YouTube? Somewhere else? I guess it depends on topics and all, but where has that productive conversation gone? 🧵 3/3

So seems like Linear and Luma are two products that are taking off. One is taking a clean and fast approach to product tracking and one is a cleaned up event system (compared to what has existed). Is that an accurate take?

I’m more shocked by the fact something like Red Lobster keeps being reincarnated and saved from death. Ok, time for a media block again. Read a few articles and they just reminded me what an absolute mess the general masses are in the USA. Getting almost zero good info, barely a blip of history, just endless FUD. I’m impressed when people can get anything positive happening these days. 🧵 2/2

I don't drive much, maybe a total of 500 miles in one year, and my life has been a thousand times better for it.

But recently I've driven a few times and have discovered the shit scum Taxi Prius drivers. WTF is wrong with these assholes?!? Right on your tail, super angry, then darting (sometimes dangerously) around to get in front and then effectively got the exact same speed. Is there some mental defect between "Taxi Driver/Ride Share" and "Prius"?? 🧵 1/2

McDonald’s is seriously shit these days. It’s just a campy place to sit while machines and some behind the machines churns out meh food. The aura is bad. 😑

Need the return of some humans and clowns and nasty ball pits or something. But meh, I guess don’t do it for me constituency, we’re not the target market for anything.

Especially in higher knowledge fields, this might work in some spaces, but I'm not going to have a verbal conversation with an AI about work I've done that has lots of nuance, specifics, details, and details it has no way to deal with. If you want to talk about it, a human should be talking to me about it. Otherwise just send an email or text message if you still want to be moderately annoying about it. 3. 🧵 3/6

If you think you need to or MUST inject at AI call into a process like this, your process is likely SEVERELY broken already and you need other fixes before you start screwing it up more with a voice based AI call in the middle. Any type of *voice* interaction should be a secondary or tertiary method of interaction with other humans. 🧵 4/6

Remember, when you inject an AI bot or AI audio/verbal process into the mix you're DEHUMANIZING the process, decreasing by default the customer service aspect, removing the personal human element of your service, and overall breaking at least several of the previously stated rules of interaction - if not ALL of them. Feel free to agree or disagree, but for the companies that have done this to me so far, you've lost me - likely forever. 🧵 5/6

Aside from already moving at a dramatically slower rate than the rest of the industry, AI is slowing down those companies even more because they can't simply use the tooling without vast and drastic security issues. In turn, these industries have had to lock down themselves and their engineers to prevent usage even more harshly than before - slowing things down even more than the regulation, auditing, and controls had previously put into place. 🧵 3/9

If you don't know how to code without AI tooling like CoPilot, Cursor, Claude, or whatever, you're not going to get as far along with those tools as you should be able to get on a day to day basis.

@timClicks@mastodon.nz also, walking isn't dangerous, but cars make it so, even on sidewalks. Even crossing the street isn't dangerous, but cars make it dangerous. The world and its climate would last a thousand more centuries and more, but it won't if we keep destroying it to enable excessive use of cars. These things, will in the end, be our end at the rate things are going.

So at this point we're talking about 3 distinctive scenarios that counter each other - somewhat harshly - and prevent increased usage of AI tooling in some situations, cause churn in other situations, and otherwise obfuscate but also bring out greater pains in the industry for the day to day software engineering work that many of us do.

This takes bore out the core points of:

The 2 Line across Lake Washington is finally real.

The opening of the Crosslake Connection on March 28, 2026, marks a significant advancement in Seattle's transportation system, interlinking Redmond, Bellevue, Mercer Island, and Seattle into a cohesive light rail network. This development enhances service frequency and alleviates traffic congestion. Observed passenger loads indicate a healthy balance, suggesting gradual habit formation among riders and promising integration with local bus services.

I'm watching Matt Pocock's "Full Walkthrough: Workflow for AI Coding". The reason is, I've decided after months of not watching any talks or consuming any content related to AI - just trying it and doing it - I figured I'd start watching some videos and consuming some content of what others' have tried.

When you're managing the state of your database and its respective schema, do you...

  1. Setup migrations and have a folder with files, etc, that manage each state (version) of the database schema over time for history or...
  2. Have a singular or set of current state of DDL for the active database state and let source control (i.e. git or whatever) manage the over time history of the database schema?
