Thinking of #DavidAttenborough -- he was a significant contributor to the career launch of #CarlosMagdalena, the #PlantMessiah. Attenborough's Year at Kew included a feature on how Magdalena had figured out how to propagate a rare species and saved them from extinction when their last wild habitat was destroyed. Attenborough has not just done so much, he has introduced so many others to the world and helped bring focus to people who deserved it. Happy 100th.

Moment of clarity: I can describe the dice mechanic of Blue Planet to tonight's #ttrpg group, two of whom are very new to the hobby, as blackjack. You want to hit the target number without going over. If your target number is a 5, you want to roll a 5 exactly on the 10-sider. A 4 is still good, a 1 is barely effective, and with a 6 you missed it by =that= much. Get a ten and you hurt yourself trying. It's different in that each die, or card, is counted separately, rather than making a hand. Your Aptitude Pool is the number of cards you get to flip to try and find a winner, ignoring any cards that bust if you have a good one.
Is there a name for the transformation noise sequence popular in American cartoons in the 50s and 60s? Super Chicken if you need an example, and it sounds like the Foley artist was told to hit random stuff in rhythm.

#FediHelp my MX Linux laptop got borked by the Tuesday patch run, and I'm unable to figure out what happened. I'm running a Lenovo Ideapad with the current distro version. I'm able to boot fine with an iso of the previous major version. Booting with the current iso, which includes the most recent patch levels, results in:
* normal boot from media
* switch to graphics mode screen with progress bar
* fail to black text mode screen with nonfunctional cursor, no prompt, instead of rolling to the graphic mode login screen
More info available on request. I'm able to chroot to the laptop's partition, but need guidance as to what to do there.

Growing plants on an actual spaceship would require protecting the plants from acceleration. You'd want to put the pot on gimbals, I would think, with some kind of support structure for the foliage. You'd also want to grow shorter plants with heavier stems, to survive multiple g's.
