@misty@digipres.club Did I mention our oven had an RF chip in it that was broadcasting an open wifi network with the password in the SSID, 24/7, and the only way to turn it off is to either sign up for an LG account and use "the app", or just... take your wall mounted oven out of the wall, open up the casing, remove more casing, then remove even more casing, and then you rip that stupid chip out?

But the idea that "you did free work for companies" just because companies literally did the thing you told them they could do is deeply idiotic. You literally said it was fair for someone else to derive as much value from your work as they could manage by releasing your work as FOSS. If that's not what you want, or now that your stuff is popular you suddenly want to get paid for it, you don't want free, open source software. You want something else.

New rule: if your website doesn't have meaningful content when NoScript is turned on, you're deleted from the internet. The end, no complains, you fucked up. Get the fuck off my lawn.

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social to be fair, that's literally how "normal people" experience this stuff and it's not their fault they have no idea wtf is actually going on, to them it's fucking magic. Having a phd makes no fucking difference there, this guy knows zoology in and out and has no fucking idea how computers work.

Hey Microsoft: how about you first start with making an OS that just works out of the box. Heck, take Windows 7, pretend everything after that never happened, and add modern architecture and protocol support to it. Then call it Windows Core 12 and let the current line of Windows die.

There's FOSS that you make because it solves *your* problems, and that's the driver, and there's FOSS you make because you think it solves *others'* problems, and one of those two has immediate value and it's irrelevant what the rest of the world does with it so why not put it online, and the other may have value but you'll end up feeling like you're doing free work for a world that doesn't show enough appreciation for that. The solution to that feeling is blindingly obvious.

@Chris_G@fosstodon.org Same. You learn the best by trying to teach it to someone else, and the Bezier page is pretty much that: I needed it because I wanted to understand font glyph rendering, and true understanding covers a lot of ground!

And it's also perfectly fine to give projects to other people once it does what you need. That version that does what you needed? Just use that! Let others take the project in a new direction if that's what they want, you don't have to own everything you make. And even if you really want to, I'll let you in on a little secret: *you can fork your own project*. Just fork it, let a different community deal with owning the original and keep doing your own thing on the fork. You don't need ownership

@plwt@mstdn.social The lack of Proton at the time made that a non-starter, but today? If they wanted? Almost certainly trivial if you have 10,000 employees that you can put on the task.

@Foxboron what if we turn the anger into calling this out in the issue trackers? Which is what folks did. Then the issue tracker got locked down. Your toot is pulling double duty as both "don't harass/doxx people" which, yes, obviously, don't fucking harass individuals. Good call-out. But at the same time it *also* reads as then saying "don't complain to FOSS maintainers" which, no, you absolutely should. Everyone should complain loud and publicly about nonsense like what systemd just pulled.

@carnage4life@mas.to "in recent history", sure. But don't make me prove Godwin's law once again. Too many people lost their lives in the 20th century for glib statements like this alone. Oh hey, heard of Pol Pot? This it really not okay - yes Trump is a fucking disaster, but don't pretend he's the worst switch by even half a long-shot just because suddenly it's happening in the US.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social @zakalwe@plasmatrap.com it's literally why the UK demanded it. We don't live in a very nice world at the moment, lots of fights to be had to rein all this back in and lots of political parties that need to be joined by level headed folks so they can be taken over by people who actually care about more than just their clique of friends =(

@tuomas_h@mastodon.social I feel like I run into this every day - download an app from "not the app store", try to run it, get a "this thing is corrupt you need to delete it" error. Go to settings, security, scroll down, "oh look, I just need to explicitly tell MacOS that it should do what I want it to, instead of what some billionaire wants" =/ Concrete example: if you grab Little Snitch from https://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/download.html and try to run it.

we have opinions idgaf, explain to me why your stupid pans can't have normal handles. You know we invented detents and springs in the 18th century, right? Making a decent, detachable 100lbs-carrying wooden handle with a metal core should be a fucking no-brainer. wait wh- yeah it's almost like you don't fucking work in a goddamn kitchen and instead just romanticize cooking.

turns out a 10gbe network card will do a great job at overheating whatever thing it's mounted right next to. Like your PSU Making it run the fan at max blast even at 5% utilization. ...I need a PCIe riser so I can put this card *outside* the case >_>

@nixCraft@mastodon.social jesus, we could at least read the article and go "...this makes no sense, the fsevents log literally says it's unpacked something, so how big was that?" Because the entire article is based on the assumption of a 4GB payload which even the author himself seems to know is wrong, then immediately ignores that.
