@mhoye I just saw someone on the Humblebrag platform say that he used Claude to write a 20-page academic article over a weekend that “was surprisingly good“ albeit that it produced no original thought and lots of people said how great this was because it would make them so much more productive and as an academic who truly loves the slow work of digging deep and developing new ideas I‘m wondering when this obsession with fast food research became a thing and also I want to retire now.

I’ve lived in this country for just over 30 years and the FPTP electoral system that is allegedly preferable because it “provides political stability” has just gifted us my 10th Prime Minister.

During the same time, Germany, which uses proportional representation, has had five Chancellors. Maybe it’s time for a rethink.

@davidallengreen@mastodon.green The thing that really worries me about this is that, to my mind, the only way in which they can feel this secure about their ”absolute immunity” and their being under his protection, is for them to genuinely believe that there will never be anybody else in power again. And that is a scary thought because it means that a lot of thugs equipped with heavy armoury now have a vested interest in making it so.

@shafik Honestly, we all are 😒 It is very exhausting and dispiriting to have to read so much mediocrity and blatant falsehoods. Makes marking essays take twice as long and feel like wading through treacle.

We held refreshments ready for the poor Deliveroo people who tried to hand us the takeout we never ordered but that the guy on the other side of the road seemed to live on.

@mattblaze@federate.social I still think the Waste Incineration Plant in Vienna (which also supplies heat to the city) is the undisputed winner in the beautification stakes with its Hundertwasser design. But I agree that the stark, often brutalist architecture of power plants has its own beauty. I love Torness Power Station on the beautiful East Coast of Scotland and Dungeness, down in the South, particularly when viewed from Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage garden. Both give quite an eery vibe
