mastodon 4.7.2Retired, Victoria BC. Interested in food (whole-food non-animal), cooking, making #tempeh (wrote a (little) book about it), #fermenting vegetables, movies, books, wetshaving (wrote a book about it), and Nordic walking. Since May 2025, I have been intensely focused on learning #Esperanto.
I use Anki Esperanto decks, including my own deck, to which I add cards for words I encounter while reading. As a daily chore, learning vocabulary with Anki is not bad — on a par with washing dishes — but I recently started thinking of the activity as collecting words — like collecting Pokémon cards, say. Like Pokémon cards, new words bring new powers (of naming things — and of course, in magic, if one knows the names of things, one has power over them 🙂).
I started learning Esperanto for 2 reasons:
1. To find out what being fluent in another language felt like. Esperanto was the obvious choice: easy to learn, plus greatly helps in learning another language — see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paderborn_method)
2. To observe the mental process: what happened along the way.
I just figured out why I am so easily distracted when practicing listening skills, and a workaround: https://leisureguy.ca/2026/02/08/stubborn-subconscious/

The next session (3 months, weekly online Zoom meetings of 1 hour) of the London Esperanto Club's courses, from beginnning courses (taught in English) to more advanced courses (taught in Esperanto) are now open for registration. Courses will begin April.
See https://kursaro.net for more info.
It's telling that, after shooting Alex Pretti to death, the agents fled the scene. That is way outside the paradigm of law enforcement, but consistent with gang behavior.
One goal of my learning Esperanto (& the same would hold true for learning any language; I picked Esperanto because it was designed to be easy to learn) is to observe the process of learning: how my mind reacts & changes as it develops a new skill.
I just posted about one thing I have now encountered several times: hitting a (temporary) wall, when I find I have to take a break of a day or two before I can continue. Here's the most recent:

Many people underestimate the rapidity of AI's improvement. Two recent examples, one medical and one in theoretical physics, show how quickly AI is improving.
It's easy to see how Trump ran into the ground and bankrupted all those businesses he owned. He's doing the same thing to the US and also working to destroy other countries as well: Ukraine, Canada, the EU, and so on.

I live in Canada, and I follow the war closely: Jake Broe, Jason Jay Smart, Paul Warburg, Jay in Kyiv, Wes O'Donnell, Caolan Robertson, Professor Gerdes Explains, Frontline (London Times), Kyiv Post, Silicon Curtain, Pyotr Kurzin, Warthog Defense, Kyiv Independent, and others, all on YouTube. I don't know what others in my country follow.
