@ChuckMcManis @lcamtuf now why the hell, after all these years, have I not heard of Chesterton’s Fence? Is this what I missed by not learning my trade at a uni? Kinda rhetorical, but I _still_ feel I must’ve missed something other than the debt… Anyway, thank you. It’s going to provide a nice two-worder when reviewing prs by newbies - and a lot of oldbies and, lest l forget, their sloppy chums.

@kenshirriff @dnaunton this is fascinating. I also congratulate you on one of the clearest summaries of celestial navigation I have read. Ages ago I read Francis Chichester’s account of his solo float plane flight from New Zealand to Australia in the 1930s, when he pioneered aerial celestial nav. He went into some detail and was undoubtably a kind of genius, but completely incomprehensible! The man was not a writer. Or much of a mechanic… and that almost killed him.

@briankrebs that rings bells. Back when I lived in Cape Town end of the 90s there were two internet cafes in Seapoint. Both the owners drank at my bar, and both continuously DDOSed each other. I was in a privileged position: use the one that was winning that day and pity the customers that pay. None of the CEOs of these corps are South Africans in their late fifties, perchance?

So, half a century ago we got Earthrise, an image that reset humanity’s view of its place in the universe. Now, seen with the perspective of a million kilometres, the earth is setting.

Right now it feels like Earthset is all we have been aiming at for the intervening 56 years.

The Earth will rise again. It does not care if we are here to celebrate. Are people looking at that amazing image and thinking that? Or thinking “It’s probably AI”?

I don’t seem to do anything other than eat and shit opinions about AI these days. There’s a half-planted vegetable garden outside the back door. This Easter I must show it some love.

@Steve@social.coop @SeanCasten@mastodon.social I think he means “we, the oil industry”. Am I right that America only exports around 10% of the oil it produces? If so, he’ll be making all that lovely money… from Americans.

@Sassinake @andrewnez whale fall is a great analogy. But what of the ones that somehow stay afloat? From the PHP world I’m thinking of projects like drupal - don’t use it, but it’s been around for yonks and last time I checked the code looked very well cared for. Or the small ones that are essential and still mostly one person’s work. Is there any common denominator?

@opencage @KerryMitchell the Sea of Azov is another underreported one. Sure, Russia took Mariupol with infamous brutality, but the Kerch entrance is pretty much denied to all but the brave, thanks to Ukrainian sea drones. And that gets you onto the Volga-Don, turn to starboard for the Caspian or dead ahead up nearly as far as the Urals and, if you’ve really want to keep going, all the way to the Baltic. Damn I wish the tyrants would stop their idiotic wars.

Just opened my Easter #whisky order. I’d tossed a coin and included a Thomson Bros Mystery Malt. It cost £60. The Thomson chaps aren’t going to sell you rubbish, but you might get an interesting five year old worth half the price.

I got lucky - a Tullibardine 19yo. And oh it’s lovely. Can’t nail down the taste completely, but it’s subtle - not an Oloroso cosh for once.

Can I get some advice?

Every time an application gives me a “summarise this” or “ask rovo” or whatever AI button that I never asked for, should I just click it? That’s gonna cost them some money, and that’s the only thing they understand.

Can we burn these arses tokens faster than they burn the planet?
