By 2015, I was a complete mess. Everything I touched in life had turned to shit and withered.
I found myself working up in Yellowknife and spent most evenings in a café. It wasn't long before I was scratching out an entire life analysis in a sketchbook trying to figure out where I went so horribly wrong.
I went all the way back as far as I could remember and wrote down every major choice point I had control of.
After a couple of evenings burning ink cataloging my past in the sketchbook, I hit my teen years. And I remembered this whole silly thing about wanting to be a girl.
I stopped. Ordered another espresso. Came back. Stared at the sketchbook. Wrote “If you go down this path, you might not come back.” Stared a bit more. Packed up, went back to the workers' motel.
I wasn't ready. Not that night.
I was scared about going to the café after work the next day. It was on my mind all shift. But, I went. Opened back to the last page. Took a deep breath. Put my pen to paper. And. Well.
Here we are.
But, I didn't transition for another six years. After that summer, my dad went homeless and was living in his welding shop. I was working cheap or free to keep him from sleeping rough while trying to also help my partner through her ups and downs. Transition seemed so close, but so far. Trying to transition while working construction would have meant my dad's clients would have walked. Everything would have collapsed.
2020 had a knack for many things collapsing, more than we knew. Like many trans people, the pandemic catalyzed me being able to transition. Unlike most people, it's because I finally had lost nearly everything. The pandemic made quick work of killing the welding shop and my dad moved to Ontario. I had little left to lose, just my relationship. Finally, just after the New Year in 2021, I came out.
And… it's been a struggle. I unexpectedly became disabled in an industrial accident just over a year into transition. My partner's health has declined. Once I'm off compensation, the future looks… not great.
But, would I take my transition back? No. I fought for this. No matter how tattered, how bad, how cloistered my transition has been, I wouldn't trade it for the world.
