mastodon 4.7.3
  • Open on sfba.social

Met the love of my life in 1968 & together ever since, moved to #SFBayArea at 18 for SF State, drafted away by the #AlternateService as a CO, returned in ‘78. Was a #Union biomedical tech until retiring to Reno, NV. Resettled 03/22 in Vallejo. Never used Twitter but thought I’d give social media a go after learning about #Mastodon. Looking to find a local group of #Chess players. Favorite quote - It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

@arrrg@kolektiva.social There aren’t enough Senate seats in play to reach 60 votes needed to convict (PA’s Fetterman will be among the nay votes). And after wasting all that time, even if he was convicted, you’d be putting Vance in his place, firing up a MAGA base for revenge in 2028. It’s self defeating pointless, and bad politics. Impeaching his minions, on the other hand, is going to make a difference and should cause some of these high ranking cabinet officers to realize that they have a duty to the constitution and not the man and if and when they remove him under the 25th amendment, the rancor will split the Republicans and improve Dem’s position in 2028

Here’s a thought that might get some result long term to control police violence against the public. Anytime there is an officer involved shooting resulting in death, all police officers in the same police force take a 10% cut in pay. Make it a part of the union contract. Offset this with a bonus when no shooting occurs for a specified time period. My thinking is that officers who turn a blind eye to excessive force may feel differently when it affects their own paycheck

@f800gecko@mastodon.online I took part in that class action lawsuit against Equifax. Filling out the paperwork and waiting years to finally get about $8.00 that I had to load onto an electronic credit card. Then I left it there for a couple of years, basically I just forgot about it until I got an email reminder from them. So I went to use it and found that the credit card fees ate the entire value of the card. Totally my fault for not spending it immediately, but getting that reminder email from them once the cards value was depleted was really a pisser @pluralistic@mamot.fr

@janneke Despite this thread focusing on the plight of animals, wherein the debate centers over whether they are respected as life forms in their own way, the question for me remains whether or not we humans can be afforded the respect we deserve and not be treated like a corporation’s chattel in the quest to use AI. @tjbutt58 @minego

@black_intellect@mstdn.social The last line: “But we've already lost if we roll over and let the criminals run free.” is what happened in Italy when Mussolini threatened violence and the authorities surrendered without a fight. It’s what can happen anywhere when people of conscience submit to threats. Holding tfg and extremists responsible will always prove more practical and effective than holding your nose and letting the stink pervade society. Hate and violence are easy, but the tools of cowards in a mob. Hold the leader accountable and the mob will either turn on each other or run for cover.

@donmelton@mstdn.social These intolerant bigots don’t want to give trans folk any legitimacy, not even to life. This is their religion now, back to the Bronze Age where stoning “the other” to death was considered the moral imperative. They believe in a god that is all about hate, vengeance and fear. They talk about trans folks (and LGBQ+) in the same way Nazis talked about Jewish folks, dehumanizing them to make it easier for society to discount their lives. Concentration camps for migrants, causing medical care to be inaccessible and silencing opposition is causing increases in suicides and provoking violence. When Representative Zephyr said they have blood on their hands, it wasn’t hyperbole, it was fact.

@RushGirl@stranger.social @dgar@aus.social History may not repeat itself, but it rhymes. We’re now watching the chorus from 1930’s Germany, just substitute GOP for Nazi party. Oh, wait, you don’t have to, they are still using that brand, too

@gusbova@texasobserver.social #Union is the only way workers get a say in the companies that control their lives. After a 40% raise for CEO pay, stockholders should remember how their dividends are produced and be glad to reward the real source of their wealth

@tombarkas@mas.to That is an easy mistake to make, especially with the recent news outing so many of the members of the “Protect and serve” profession as right wing extremists. As long as there have been Nazis, they have always found a welcoming home in America, but after unmasking the evil they perpetrated on humanity in the last century, I wonder how they have become empowered again. My guess is that the struggle to survive in this world, with its income inequality so extreme, has allowed hate to fester and hollowed out our humanity.
