"This is one hour of satellite trails over the world's darkest sky. Astronomers say nearly 2 million planned satellites could be 'devastating" by BBC @skyatnightmag@flipboard.com - Study by European Southern Observatory ESO concurs with other astronomers that planned satellite constellations totaling over 1 million objects in orbit are disastrous for #astronomy. It estimates overwhelming obstruction above 100,000 total objects. https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/news/eso-study-satellite-trails #science #LightPollution #satellite #space #environment

"Reaction wheel failures leave Swift rescue mission spinning in orbit" by @arstechnica@mastodon.social / Stephen Clark - #NASA Link satellite launched July 3 had 2 of 3 reaction wheels fail. Operators are compensating by using electric ion thrusters more than designed to keep the spacecraft stable. Link is a rescue mission to re-boost the Swift Observatory, a 22 year old gamma ray space telescope. Swift will re-enter if not re-boosted in the next few months. https://arstechnica.com/space/2026/07/reaction-wheel-failures-leave-swift-rescue-mission-spinning-in-orbit/ #astronomy #space #science

64 years ago, July 9, 1962: "Starfish Prime" nuclear test was the first successful nuclear explosion in #space. (Second attempt of failed "Starfish" test.) The flash was visible southwest of Hawaii. Aurora formed over Hawaii and New Zealand. But it had unintended consequences. An electromagnetic pulse knocked out power in Hawaii, ~600mi/1000km away. Radiation caused the early demise of all satellites in orbit at the time. https://spaceweatherarchive.com/2022/07/08/starfish-prime-the-first-accidental-geomagnetic-storm/ #StarfishPrime #military #nuclear #history #TDIH

"How Many Decimals of Pi Do We Really Need?" by #NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory JPL - Short answer: for spacecraft navigation around the solar system (as far as humanity has launched anything so far) NASA determined 15 digits after the decimal point is sufficient. So for NASA, 𝝿 = 3.141592653589793 . That yields an error of about 1.5cm/0.5in at the extremities of the solar system. Good enough. https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/news/how-many-decimals-of-pi-do-we-really-need/ #astronomy #space #math #PiDay

"Astronauts on International Space Station take shelter in SpaceX Dragon as cosmonauts try to fix air leak" by @Spacecom@flipboard.com - As a precaution, #NASA had its #ISS #Crew12 astronauts shelter in the #SpaceX #CrewDragon with the hatch closed while 2 Russian cosmonauts worked on fixing a small air leak in the module Zvezda, one of the oldest parts of the space station from 2000. 20 years ago, June 5 & 6, 2006: I visited the New Mexico Spaceport to see UP Aerospace's new launch pad. This was before Virgin Galactic's runway and terminal were built. So it was a mostly-empty desert with a few dirt roads and this launch pad. It was first. UPA would begin flying commercial suborbital space payloads later that year, and continues to use the site today. #NewSpace #space #business

"There’s More To Global Positioning Than Just GPS" by @hackaday@hackaday.social - US GPS🛰️ started it but isn't the only public global navigation system now. Initially planned for military use, GPS was first to open to public use (after KAL Flight 007✈️ was shot down in 1983) and then others followed. Of course, a discussion among politicians won't get #Pluto reclassified back as a planet. Scientists & astronomers decide criteria for a planet. Pluto is either in or out of that definition. I wonder what criteria that would define Pluto as a planet would not also apply to our Moon, a.k.a. Luna. Are we ready for Earth🌎/Luna🌗 to be officially a binary planet system? After trying to be the center of our universe for all of history, could we take that step? #astronomy #planetary #science

RE: @AstroHawk@spacey.space

2 years ago, April 8, 2024: I witnessed the total solar eclipse at Mesquite, Texas (eastern Dallas metro). We could see totality through thin clouds. It was a relief because it was overcast all morning. Cumulus clouds were slower to form than forecast because they depend on solar heating, which was diminished by the eclipse. We couldn't see the corona lines like I saw in 2017. But everyone noticed an enormous prominence (solar flare) peeking around the Moon. #SolarEclipse2024 #astronomy #weather

@metnix@mastodon.xyz IAU's planet definition was controversial. It exposed a rift between astronomers and planetary scientists. The timing in 2006 of the ruling was odd because it had potential to affect media attention and funding for the just-launched New Horizons mission to fly by Pluto. It turned out not to be an issue. Fortunately NH went ahead and showed us Pluto doesn't have to be classified by IAU as a planet to be worthy of planetary science research... and beautiful.

@metnix@mastodon.xyz It's a murky definition when applied to Earth & Moon. The Sun exerts stronger gravity on the Moon - we co-orbit the Sun. Also, the center of mass of Earth/Luna system is still within the Earth. But as the Moon moves away, the center will be outside Earth. Should the definition consider whether the center of mass could be outside both bodies at any time past or future? If so, then we're a binary planet. I don't have a problem, as long as the definition is based on science, not politics.

@coreyspowell I haven't seen the movie yet, but probably will this coming week. Your remarks seem to confirm my expectations are at the right level, looking for science-inspired entertainment. But it seems not the same level from Weir's "The Martian" where the character had to "science the 💲❌🙊💥 out of this". Though I even noticed some holes in The Martian (like never ever play with hydrazine) it was mostly the intense-but-plausible story he intended.

I updated my program that lists close passes by NEO (Near-Earth Object) asteroids available in #NASA JPL data. We were warned of a flood of new objects discovered by the Vera Rubin Observatory. I changed the program from hard-coded watching within 2 lunar distances, to a configurable distance. For this niche, the flood is more of a rising tide. For now I set it back to 2LD. Most show up as discovered just before to days after the closest approach time. #LowFlyingRocks #asteroid #astronomy #space
