Is anyone aware of an existing KVM-type switch that would support sharing a single non-ADB keyboard/mouse between a #NeXT Cube (‘040 w/Dimension Board) and a NeXT Turbo slab? I have one of each on my desk and already have a mechanical VGA switcher for the display side of things, but I’d love to use a single NeXT keyboard/mouse from a desk space perspective (and not have to unplug/replug it between the machines). I guess I need to factor in the SoundBox as well. #retrocomputing #kvm

#NeXT / #Apple had the right idea.

  • User homes are in /Users

  • Each app is in /Applications and looks like a regular file but is actually a folder (i.e. you can cd into it and examine the contents)

  • The operating system is in /System

  • Files shared among apps (except files that come with the OS), including configuration files, are in /Library

  • Static libraries, debug info, C headers, OS API reference docs, etc go in /Developer

i realize that this only speaks to 0.1% of you, but some useful info for NeXTStation owners: the battery backup that shipped with the nextstation is a BR 2/3A type battery - a chub gherkin that costs about $7-12 USD and are not easy to find these days. thankfully i've discovered a modern direct swap equivalent: the CR123A. it is used in various types of LED flashlights. it outputs the same voltage. the only difference i noticed is that the CR123A is about 0.5mm longer due to slightly more protruding positive terminal. thankfully, the battery holder accepts it (it just puts more pressure on the holder's metal flexi-tab). the CR123A can be found for $1 each. #vintageApple #macintosh #next #retroComputing #vintageComputing
