#11ty

Ever have one of those days where you just can't figure out a bit of code that should be simple? I'm trying to put together a big `` template in an #11ty nunjucks shortcode. I have an external image store and optimiser, and so I just want to pass the filename so that I can piece together the correct query url to resize/optimise the image. Can I get that to work? Can I bobbins! It seems to be trying to insert an object rather than interpreting the filename as a plain string to insert into another string. Any help given might stop me exploding with frustration. I expect that I am doing something dumb.

Interesting approach: a minimalist, db-less static site generator blog where every post is stored as exactly one JSON file and comments are offloaded to either the Fediverse or Bluesky, according to the blogger's preference. I've got way too much customization in my current #11ty and #ClassicPress setup, but it would be interesting to look at for a side project or experiment. Though I'm not convinced JSON is better than Markdown with front matter. Yes, it moves the parsing complexity from the build stage to the saving-your-work stage, so I suppose that counts for something. https://blogsh.app https://mastodon.social/@blogsh/117016992194995688 #blogging #blogsh

I've posted a video about how you can build a site from scratch in any #programming language you like without the need for an off-the-shelf static site generator (#ssg): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t3BN3Z-TkE&t=1147s This compares using an SSG like #Astro or #Eleventy (#11ty) to build a blog with building the same blog in #Python, #JavaScript, or even a language like #Zig. I'm designing #WebOrigami to be the most concise and clearest language for this purpose — but you can use any language you like.

I just switched a site from #11ty 3.1.6 to #buildawesome alpha for the new Nunjucks async, and I reduced my build time from 55 seconds to 33 seconds, removed 40+ packages, and made 937 deletions in package.json. I could probably go lower if I ditch the PDF metadata checking, but I keep having PDF issues, so I'm loath to remove it. https://www.adamdjbrett.com/blog/2026-07-05-build-awesome-cloudflare-optimization/

Static websites are the future. Not every site needs to be dynamically generated. Having a #blog served by a complex CMS like WordPress feels unnecessary after using #11ty . Compute is growing in cost and becoming scarce. Why waste it on sites suited for static generation? Plus, who wants to host a server with a database, a CMS, a bunch of plugins and all the security headaches that comes with it? #SSG #IndieWeb #Blogging
