Really wish people would stop using the hashtag #Brussels to talk about the #EU. Brussels is a city with over 1M inhabitants. We don't have another hashtag. Our city is not just a synonym for the EU.

I went ahead and resurrected project #lopal, which is a sort of exploratory project in UI for music, but also other things.

The core idea is to have an interface made of elements that compose together by nesting. Container elements can provide a "medium" for their children, which informs them on how and where they should render.

Here in this demo I have two medium: a 2D medium, and a temporal medium. The canvas widget implements the former, while the track widget implements the latter.

I can put any widget into any container, but some widgets will implement special behaviors in some contexts. For example, the "clip" widget will size itself based on the zoom level of the temporal medium it's in.

Widgets can also implement behavior. Here pretty much each widget implements a sampling method, which gets called by the player widget when I press play. The audio widget will just sample from its audio buffer. The clip widget will clip the buffer returned by its inner widget. The temporal position widget will offset the buffer of its inner widget. The track widget will sum the buffers of all inner widgets. And so on.

I'm looking to learn a bit of university-level biology, biochemistry and ecology. Curious to know if anyone has recommendations for textbooks, online courses, whatever else. I don't really know where to start, I mostly studied math, physics, and CS 😄 Boosts are welcome!

@spiralganglion@merveilles.town c • My favourite lyricist is still Spencer Krug (saying "still" because this was already true 10 years ago). He writes songs that feel both abstract and very specific, and he turns all stories into epics. No idea how he does it. At the moment I'm also big into Hozier, Rosie Tucker, and The Beths, when it comes to inspiration for songwriting. b • I love good lyrics. The music is what invites me in, the lyrics are what makes me stay awhile. a • In terms of doing the writing myself, I've had better results recently with first writing (free-form) poems, and then adapting them into songs. I find writing a song from nothing to be excessively hard, and it tends to generate very formulaic songs. If I have a poem to start from, then I can use rhythm of the words as a basis for the melody, repeat important parts to create choruses, and so on. I might change much of the poem in the process, but that's fine. I got this way of working from an interview of Patrick Stump on Song Exploder, where he explained how Fall Out Boy wrote their early songs. Pete Wentz pulled scraps of lyrics and poems out of the ether and threw them into notebooks, and then later Patrick would shape these into songs. And if you need a tip for writing (bits of) poems, my usual technique is to visit this website: https://wordcounter.net/random-word-generator I generate 2 words at random and use them as a basis or theme for a few lines. Rinse and repeat.

I'm once again thinking about game ideas, and vaguely wanting to prototype them. A problem is that I don't enjoy drawing enough to take the time to make assets, even bad ones.

Thankfully, many talented artists sell their work on itch.io, from 2D assets to sound effects, music and 3D models.

I'm thinking of prototyping a small action/exploration/building game using these assets: https://krishna-palacio.itch.io/minifantasy-scifi-space-derelict
https://krishna-palacio.itch.io/minifantasy-sci-fi-space-derelict-ii
https://krishna-palacio.itch.io/minifantasy-nightmare-creatures

All three for what, 15€? A bargain!
