@_elena @aral in europe, public organisations are taking care of much of the necessary infrastructure like railroads and roads. To make it possible for citizens to have easy and free access to decentralized digital platforms, european governments could host those servers themselves professionally. That would also take the burden off private volunteers working their buts off to keep servers in the air with all expenses connected. And so, decentralized services could also become more sustainable.

For a sustainable federated structure, one could also try to have some big sturdy servers available, a government provided infrastructure, part of their information strategy, professionally run, with enough space, support and safety. Users not interested in having their own server, can just post and upload, while others create their own. Like public and private schools.

And most likely information exchange spaces like mastodon and peertube could well be seen as such type of infrastructure. And so it might be interesting to try to set up one, EU funded decentralized big server, that has some of the functions that bigtech platforms have. First you'll need to prepare a detailed proposal for such a service ....

If you can find the right EU fund for that, you could see if a structural support is possible or on a project base for a limited number of years. The biggest server I found would let me upload a maximum of 25 videos in 4K quality and that's it. They just want to create content. And I know you're thinking "oh another one, just donate". I also feel that maybe now is the right time that some prominent fediverse/mastodon actors together take the lead in creating that more robust infrastructure to accommodate growth of users leaving other platforms. Concerning the $100: that 10 GB lets me upload 4 of my 4K videos. It honestly wouldn't bring me a lot, let alone to serious content creators. Stay safe !
