Locus, Sun Microsystems; PDP-11, x86, C, Go.
Programming since 1973.
I wrote the program that calculated the GPA that appears on my high-school transcript.

Starting in 1984 I led the project at Locus to create the first x86 virtual machine, to run MS-DOS under Unix, on the AT&T 6300 Plus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6300_Plus).

The lines in the avatar are horizontal.
There should be no profit in human misery.

@gb0n@avgeek.social @skinnylatte@hachyderm.io Back in the 1980s I worked in a building about 1.5 miles straight behind that jet, near Century and the 405 freeway. We had to get special permission to put a satellite dish on the roof (to communicate with IBM in Austin) because of building height restrictions on the approach to LAX.

@BrunoLevy01@fosstodon.org Congratulations! If you're serious about running Unix, I'd suggest trying to scrounge up the full 256KB of main memory. Back in 1979-1982 I ran the UCLA Math Department PDP-11. The Unix v6 kernel by itself was around 48KB; v7 was around 64KB with just a very few kernel buffers. You might be able to get it to run with 128KB, but remember userspace programs had to swap, not page, so the entire process has to fit resident in main memory to run.

@kimlockhartga@beige.party @MennoWolff@ohai.social @wonderofscience@mastodon.social @SteveClough@metalhead.club The concentric circles illusion doesn't move for me; but on the grey background the circles look very different to me compared to the identical circles shown on the white background. On the grey background I am unable to see them as distinct concentric circles; they somehow interfere with each other. Whereas on the white background they appear clearly separate and concentric.

@hosford42@techhub.social @MennoWolff@ohai.social @kimlockhartga@beige.party @wonderofscience@mastodon.social @SteveClough@metalhead.club The rotating snakes illusion doesn't work well for me when viewed smaller. As you described a shimmer at the default size on my web browser. But if I click on it to see a larger image then I can see the rotation. I haven't tried it on a phone, but I imagine the smaller size might make it ineffective. My mastodon avatar is another illusion: the horizontal lines are parallel, when enlarged they look slanted, but not when small.

@MennoWolff@ohai.social @kimlockhartga@beige.party @wonderofscience@mastodon.social @SteveClough@metalhead.club On the grey background I cannot perceive the two concentric circles as such. They appear distorted and possibly even overlapping. (The illusion is on the grey background; white background is only there to show what the circles look like without the illusion). When I stare at the black spot in the middle of the fractal, the colors in the larger "twisters" slowly undulate. The snakes moving illusion may work better for people under 40.

@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org It seems inevitable that Trump will attempt to deploy a nuclear weapon in Iran, because Trump simply cannot stand to lose, and he has stupidly put himself into a position that he cannot win using only conventional weapons. At that point hopefully someone will have the balls to remove the madman from office before his orders are carried out.

@tao@mathstodon.xyz I ran the first UCLA Math departmental computer when I was a grad student under David Cantor from 1979 to 1982. We had a DEC PDP-11/23 with 512KB RAM, a 70MB disk, and 9600-baud serial ASCII terminals. I brought up Unix v6 and then v7 by generating bootable root images on 2.5MB removable RK05 disks on a computer down in the Comp Sci department. Just as I was leaving in 1982, the department replaced the PDP-11/23 with a VAX, and another grad student, Peter Reiher, took over as sysadmin.
