portability(TM) #netbsd #pkgsrc #tigersrc

  • alix3d3 (i586) - it finds out what uses SSE2 when it shouldn't
  • er4 (evbmips64n64eb) - it finds out when things hardcode a list of supported archs
  • mac mini (powerpc; usually runs darwin) - it finds out when things don't specify a c/c++ lang std
  • olimex a64 (aarch64) - it finds out when the arm drivers get too piney.
  • banana pi (earmv7hfeb) - ugh.
  • blade 150 (sparc64, bottom) - it finds out EVERYTHING.

100% not running 24/7.

Sitting at a table with friends planning a journey on a paper map with pens is better than internet mapping because it makes me feel like a pirate. There, I said it.

Error messages from American tech companies: "Oops, something went wrong! Don't worry, our highly trained monkeys are right on it..."

Error messages from German tech companies: "Your transaction was rejected because its header is in violation of RFC 5321 and RFC 5322. For further information, please contact a system administrator."

(Just had to explain to someone what their GMX.com error message meant.)

few people seem to remember this, but when VEVO first started, it worked by taking music videos uploaded on unofficial channels, removing the original, and reuploading them.

this resulted in some ... interesting official-looking unofficial videos being uploaded to artists' official channels - sometimes compilations of random live footage, quite well edited.

in some cases, these remain, but the Windows Movie Maker intros have mysteriously disappeared.

* upgrade using freebsd-update: consistently broken system, due to this bug: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=289769
* upgrade from source: broken due to clang issues
* fresh install: broken due to DISTRIBUTIONS in installerconfig no longer being honoured, due to system packages churn

solution: install #freebsd 14. copy files from sets to upgrade to 15.

It seems phpbb does things like store every login attempt in its sql database, which maybe explains why I have a 1GB sqlite3 database.

In this case, a text file might be more efficient.

A friend gifted me a 32x game that they found. Since I didn't have a 32x but now have a reason to get one, this seems like a cursed gift.

Many post-Soviet leaders have been asked "how does one patch KDE2 under FreeBSD?", and many have provided serious and actually useful responses. https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/how-does-one-patch-kde2-under-freebsd

The human eye-brain connection is a strange thing... When using a NTSC colour palette, but not a NTSC signal, something about the resulting image just looks wrong. Like I'm expecting there to be lossy details, but there aren't any.

Given there's been a lot of improvements to the Log File System in #NetBSD -current, here's how you can install a system to boot to an LFS root:

  • Download -current, e.g. https://nycdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/HEAD/latest/images/NetBSD-11.99.8-amd64-dvd.iso
  • Boot the installer and follow the steps as usual
  • When it shows you the final partition layout, use the arrow keys up to the partition displaying "FFSv2ea". Press return.
  • Modify its "type" to "4.4LFS", scroll down and select "OK".
  • Finish the installation and reboot. Pretty easy, right?
