re: Data Center Question
@futurebird@sauropods.win The issue is externalities, not data centers themselves. If DCs used renewable power and closed loop cooling and created good jobs and paid a fair share of taxes, it'd be fine. And there are data centers like that so we know it is possible. But the problem is that the hyperscalers want the most bang for the buck and that only comes with rampant exploitation.

@SecureOwl@infosec.exchange Cheers! I finally got Teams out of my life, and now I'm thinking about what I'd give to get rid of Atlassian.

@julienw @nixCraft Yeah, and we're even asking people to show us how they use AI during coding interviews, if they happen to be people that like AI. It's not verboten. Ya just can't misrepresent AI work as your own!

guh

https://doc.rust-lang.org/src/core/str/mod.rs.html#121

/// Returns the length of `self`.
///
/// This length is in bytes, not [`char`]s or graphemes. In other words,
/// it might not be what a human considers the length of the string.

why is programming in 2026 like this?

(turns out i actually need floor_char_boundary because truncating strings is hard)

The boost copyright file is 2MB and I have 23 identical copies of it installed on a modest Ubuntu 24.04 box.

(Talking /usr/share/doc/libboost1.83-dev/copyright etc)

I clicked a "Share via E-mail" link in Zillow and LibreWolf opened Emacs and my Emacs isn't even configured as an email client.

2026 is so weird.

A lot of folks seem to be struggling to put words to the concept of "LLMs violate human dignity" -- and yeah that's true, and also it's such a difficult argument to pin down.

Had to break out the old OG Pixel XL today to test something, and idk if GBoard was just that much better on old phones, or it's just memory, but gosh typing on that keyboard feels so much better than on my modern Pixel.

There is a type of developer who enjoys a burger loaded with grilled mushrooms, and decides that grilled mushrooms are delicious.

And so they find some mushrooms in the woods, and cuts up those mushrooms, grills them, and eats them on a sandwich. The developer then dies slowly and painfully.

I was looking at a bug trap we have set up to catch spotted lanternflies, an invasive pest. It's a sort of net cage that is easy for bugs to fly in to, but difficult to fly out of.

Looking at it from a few feet away, it's easy to see how to chart a course out of it, were one to be trapped. But if you're in it and don't know about the big picture, you're stuck.

Been wondering if we humans are in the same kind of trap. If we are, the efficiency and effectiveness of language and communication are probably the "big picture" we're missing in terms of how to escape. Many concepts in science and sociology become very straightforward once we figure out how to communicate them.

@nixCraft In my experience the face filters are pretty rare. But I'm still on multiple panels a week these days where it is obvious that the candidate is reading answers from a screen.

Those of us who haven played Satisfactory already know that plastic is basically free. Whether you're extracting natural gas or oil, it comes with monomer by-products like ethylene and propylene. They might sound familiar, because they are the base molecules cross-linked into plastics like high-density polyethylene (milk jugs) and polypropylene (which is the plastic part of all your metallized/mylar-style chip bags, and even things like your polycarbonate water bottles start off as propylene extracted from the ground). Right now about 10% of petroleum and natural gas are extracted and converted into plastics, and that's expected to grow as Asia and Africa modernize and consumerize, especially as petroleum demand tapers off due to electrification. But it's also relatively straightforward to make ethylene - some of the bioplastics packaging products you can buy right now are made from ethylene produced from fermented corn and sugarcane. Propylene's trickier though - there are plenty of processes, but right now they're all fairly expensive relative to getting it for "free" out of the ground as a by-product. Anyway, right now, propylene and ethylene aren't just basically free -- they are byproducts that need to be processed in order to free up capacity to extract more fuel. So next time you go shopping and drive your automobile and burn 8 lbs of fuel to get there and back, make sure you buy at least 1 lb of gross plastic packaging or other plastic products to make sure to keep your consumption in balance.

Set mem_sleep_default=deep on my kernel cmdline to try and troubleshoot lockups after waking up from sleep and... waking up is like it's 1990 all over again, but at least there haven't been any hard locks.
