Nightswimming deserves a quiet night

The photograph on the dashboard taken years ago,
turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
Every street light reveals a picture in reverse
Still it's so much clearer

I forgot my shirt at the water's edge
The moon is low tonight

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
I'm not sure all these people understand
It's not like years ago
The fear of getting caught
The recklessness in water
They cannot see me naked
These things they go away
Replaced by every day

Nightswimming,
remembering that night
September's coming soon
I'm pining for the moon
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit around the fairest sun?
The bright tide forever drawn
Could not describe nightswimming

You, I thought I knew you
You, I cannot judge
You, I thought you knew me
This one laughing quietly
Underneath my breath
Nightswimming

The photograph reflects
Every street light a reminder
Nightswimming
Deserves a quiet night
Deserves a quiet night

@bitprophet@social.coop I have never watched high level futobol until the past few weeks. I have enjoyed it ... except for the flopping. The thing about Embolo is that flop was far less blatant than most I have seen this month. Every game has a dozen or more flops that are NOT called. It is rather comical how they roll around like they need to get carted off on a stretcher and then 30 seconds later they are fine and running with world class athletes.

@mntmn Hi Lucie, I love the sentiment. I do think it is important to understand what good coding is, and coding is enjoyable. But... sorry, I have a "but" I am an experieced 30 year coder. The truth is that the best human coder cannot keep up with what AI coding can do. I was shocked when I realized this but it's true. AI can keep the entire code base in its buffer and scan and find things instantly that I would not know. It can refactor, debug and redeploy. It can generate documentation instantly. Any API, even ones I have never seen to some esoteric endpoint, it can master instantly. it has been trained billions and billions of lines of code. That is more than I have by a factor of over 100,00 million. It is like having a team of 10 cross-disciplinary developers working with you plus a documentation writer , a QA person and project manager. If I have a question about how something works, I can ask it, and it describes it and gives me links to the relevant section. It is only getting better. Every few months its capabilities leap incredibly. It still needs a team leader. It needs someone to guide what it can do. That is the role to embrace. You will be a much better team leader if you understand the fundamentals. Believe me, I understand that there are plenty of downsides to this. And .. it scares the hell out of me. But wishing it were not so will not make it go away. I dont know if you have tried the most recent releases - I use Claude Code -- but you owe it to yourself to try it if only to gauge what you are up against. And by all means -- keep learning to code on your own -- but if that is the only tool in your quiver, it should be a hobby, not a means to make a living.

@tchambers@indieweb.social why? I think there will a gradient, and an incredibly expensive pay wall moat around the most capable models. The best models will require massive amounts of data and massive amounts of compute costs. It will be out of reach to produce for all but a few organization. The cost of those models will make them accessible to only the wealthy and rich nation states, but they will solve problems/create things no other models can. There will be a range of available models from low cost to free that might be completely adequate for most everyday types of questions. Many of the "free ones" will be subsidized and promoted by the wealthy to inject behavior modifiers/propoganda.

@spaf@mstdn.social I love the sentiment of that quote...but I am pretty sure the quote comes from movie, so it was inspired by, but not written by, Tolkien. Scene in "The Hobbit" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad0kY3b6ri4 And here is the PDF version of The Hobbit book https://www.gobowenschool.co.uk/the-hobbit-pdf-book

fuck right off

well, thank you for that.

"if you dont use AI you cant program for money"

I think that gets right to the heart of the matter.

I think that is a topic worthy of serious discussion. My concern, and it fills me with anxiety, is that this is the direction we are headed.

@kissane@mas.to Well said! Prioritization of multiple issues can polarize on a single issue that people agree on. On a single issue, Alice and Bob might agree completely with one another. But then...there might be 9 other issues that Bob believes are relatively more important. Now suddenly, there seems to be a big gap between Alice and Bob on that original issue.

@tchambers@indieweb.social Anthropic does not release details, but some estimates: Older Models: As of mid-2024, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated that the largest current models cost roughly $100 million to train. Currently used Models (2024–2025): Amodei predicted that models in this time range would cost around $1 billion to develop. New Models (2025–2027): Projections suggest that the next generation will cost in the range of $10 billion or more. Long-Term Goal: Anthropic has indicated that training costs for models in the coming years are scaling toward the $100 billion range.

If what you’re saying is true, and not cherry-picked, there is no excuse whatsoever to not move on to better programming languages.

The main constraint on this is where the application is deployed. The code that is generated still needs to be deployed and run somewhere, and it depends on the hosting provider and what is available under the client's paid plan. So in practice, that limits the language and libraries that can be used, and what I have tried.

But outside of client work, you make a good point. It would be interesting to experiment with other languages, like Rust for example.

@eadanila @mntmn My intent is not to "proselytize AI". As I said, it scares the hell out of me. Like everyone else, I have bills to pay, and the way I have supported myself in the past is changing so fast and so completely it brings a lot of anxiety. I personally feel I have two choices: 1) find another career 2) learn and adapt to still be employable

very interesting...thanks for the link.

The earth's magnetic field is not uniform everywhere. In general, the poles have stronger a stronger field and the equator has weaker. Maybe a study looking at differences of populations in those ares might find something interesting.

Here I am in Silicon Valley, where they are minting multimillionaires in AI and Semi-conductor companies, but I cannot buy some $7 lotion/soap without getting an employee to unlock the cabinet.

I suppose it will help keep some human jobs here.
