Narrator: "...and just when the Green Party of England and Wales looked like it had recovered from being ostracised by the Scottish Green Party over its rampant institutional TERFism, they declared zionism a form of racism just days before a byelection and were ostracised by 47 different Green Parties in Europe." 🤡 #ukpol

I think I may have just hilariously "rolled a one" today when trying to get a beer out of the fridge at the start of the Croatia vs England game in the UEFA Nations League. 😂
The first beer can I opened immediately exploded into a beer fountain. After cleaning that up, the next beer did the same. And after cleaning that up as well I finally checked the best before date on the bottom of my cans and noticed that most of them were several months out of date, including those still in their boxes. 🙄
Kudos to me for laying off the sauce I suppose, but I spent the start of this game safely draining the contents of two dozen beer cans down the sink with the extractor fan on, and then cleaning my kitchen down from top to bottom. 😂
The last beer I have in my apartment now are four cans of Leffe Blonde that I received for my birthday earlier this year. Apparently I have until January to drink those. 🙃
In case you're seeing the news about an outbreak of the plague in Siberia on social media and having a bit of a panic because of the hysteria around it, I did some digging so you don't have to! 🙂
The WHO reports about 1000-2000 cases of the plague worldwide each year, with ~200 deaths.
Most cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Here in Europe there's been no naturally occurring case of the plague for over a century. The half-dozen or so that crop up in the US each year usually aren't fatal, and the few that are tend to be people who've misdiagnosed themselves and then not received antibiotics in time.
The Russian authorities have imposed a strict quarantine, and there's no reason to believe it's going to become a wider outbreak. This was an isolated accident under controlled lab conditions, and the one woman who tragically died was likely just very unlucky.
You're welcome. 👍🏻

People working in the UK and in your twenties, please stop opting out of your auto-enrolment workplace pensions!
Every £ you save that way is tax exempt (until it's paid out) and your employer tops it up each month, so if you don't save anything you're losing part of your pay package & paying more tax. The relatively low amount you pay in today also compounds & spares you from having to pay in much more at a later stage in your life. So opting out now is the very definition of a false economy!
If you're struggling you can adjust how much you're saving into it or potentially use salary sacrifice to save in a more tax-efficient way that increases your take-home pay. Your local council also has a household support fund if you're in immediate financial hardship.

I’d pick “Tidy Tamarin”, but I think the temptation they'll have to pick something obscure will be great so that probably won’t be it. 😂
“Ticked-off Taipan” and “Tangible Tarsier” are entirely possible. 🙃
Swim in the Bin
I’m rolling my eyes at the newspaper front pages this morning, because the millionaires saying “tax me daddy!” know that’s either not going to happen, will happen at a much lower rate than everyone else pays anyway, or their accountant will do a dodge for them that we weren’t hear about until they wrong somebody.
It’s all just intended as positive PR to make it sound like they actually care. If they really want to contribute to the public finances, they can voluntarily overpay. Funnily enough, none of them are doing that. 🙄
Each morning I keep thinking about whether I should share my early impressions of Andy Burnham as our new Prime Minister, but he seems to have a pattern of alternating between making announcements about cool things I'm on board with and making announcements that make me want to skullbash the nearest wall. So it's hard at this stage to call it one way or the other whether he's actually an improvement. 🤔
To paraphrase an age old adage, if the penalty is a fine, it's only a crime for poor people. 🙃
Anthropic just settled a lawsuit for copyright infringement at $3000 USD per author whose work was downloaded from pirate sources and then rolled into their training set for the LLM behind Claude.
It looks like the Powerball has just arrived in the UK, making us the first country outside the US to participate. 👀
It is quite expensive though, at £4 a line. If people want to participate in all three draws, that's £12 per week! 😮
Our other more established games are £1 per line for the Thunderball, £2 per line for the National Lottery, and £2.50 per line for the Euromillions.
I suppose the Postcode Lottery charges £12.50, but that's for an entire month.
I feel like Doctor Who would be a very different show if people remembered that for most of human history everyone got the shits and splinter-free toilet paper wasn’t invented until the 1930s. 🤔

DivX/xvid encoded MP4 files are now patent-free worldwide!
Sadly H.264 & AVC encoded MP4 files aren't patent-free yet, because there are still active patents in the US, Malaysia, and Brazil.

I'm a bit sad that I didn't realise this existed until after the #worldcup was already over. I hope they do 3D re-runs for Euro 2028. 😔
Pour one out for Android Central this evening. RIP

I'd say that the best (or least-worst depending on your POV) non-work use-cases I've found for GenAI so far is investigating fictional murder mysteries and playing solo D&D campaigns.
I didn't have AI bringing back interactive fiction and text adventure games on my bingo card for this year, but if this is a technology we grudgingly have to live with now, that does seem like one of the more enjoyable side-effects. 🤔
(Obligatory acknowledgement that the training data for this likely came from human authors. OpenAI is still fighting a legal battle. Anthropic settled a class action lawsuit and paid out to the publishers & authors affected)
RE: @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange
I'm watching through this recorded Twitch stream now. 👀
I'd forgotten how lightning fast the bot moves through menus. I briefly jumped back in the video thinking "Wait, did the bot just use a TM to give Nidoking Thrash? That TM doesn't exist in Gen 1 without hacking the game!" but nope, it really did just bump Nidoking up to level 23 with a couple of rare candies and learn the move properly on Nugget Bridge 😂
Also TIL (or perhaps got reminded) that the town map isn't strictly necessary in a speed run because the using fly or the Pokedex area function both pop up their own maps. It's literally just there for narrative purposes. 🗺️
