Regarding the Proton controversy: If you need private communications you should be avoiding email at all costs. SMTP, the standard that lets email clients interoperate, make it impossible to encrypt the metadata at all. This isn't the first time Proton has been forced to hand this data over by their government (Not the FBI), and it won't be the last.

Also, By Default on YouTube puts it best:
"If you have a personal librebooted OpenBSD email server in an unregistered nuclear bunker with a crypto domain connected to Tor and blurred out on Google Maps, The other half your email went across some ISP network and is just sitting on someone else's email server."

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange I don't believe in this take, and I'm especially not a big fan of the conspiratorial language you're using to describe it. How does a large spike in demand for a monopolized industry give any indication that the goal is to move users over to cloud computing? What makes this different from the pandemic shortage, or the 2011 Japan earthquake? From my perspective, this takes away from a lot of the closer, very concrete problems AI is causing right now.

@wordstitcher@thecanadian.social @mgeist@mas.to I'm also realizing after I posted this that I only used Signal as a convenient example because they specifically said they would exit Canada if this bill passes. Do you believe this about all open source messengers? Do you believe it about other open source privacy tools, like the Tor Project or GrapheneOS? Where is the line drawn with this thought process?

@veronica By extension, I guess they must also believe the mute and block buttons are censorship? It almost bothers me a little bit that people think like that, because filters (for me) have been the single biggest feature coming from the big tech social media apps. I don't have to look at politics when I don't have the mental energy to do so, for example. And I appreciate that.

As a thought experiment, I tried putting together a Steam cart of games roughly equivalent to the price of Grand Theft Auto 6: Ultimate Edition. I only prioritized games I would be interested in, but this list would be enough to last me several years if I were starting each game from scratch. Curious if other people have tried putting together similar lists and what they ended up with on theirs! #gaming #GTA6 #Steam

Fun Fact: Hellebuyck wearable 37, Skinner wears 74. This means that Skinner is, potentially, twice as good as Helle. #hnom #nhl #hockey #nhljets

Mina the Hollower was so good! I've never been a Dark Souls guy, but I did grow up with 2D Zelda games. Yacht Club Games made me understand why FromSoft games are so popular. Combat was difficult but incredibly fun. The art, story, and the music are all top notch. I can't recommend it enough, especially considering the low price tag. #gaming #minathehollower

Life tip: Keep supplies on hand to make impromptu self-care kits! They make for really nice last minute birthday/christmas gifts, or as a thoughtful gesture to someone that's going through a tough time. I like to prioritize stocking items that are low maintenance during usage, but can last a long time. For example, forgetting about an active reed diffuser has far less consequences than forgetting about an active scent candle. I also always handwrite a personalized note as the last item I add! It's easy to slap a bunch of stuff into a bag and call it a day, but including that note shows you care about that person on a deeper level.

@DiogoConstantino@masto.pt @mttaggart@infosec.exchange I'm going to assume you mean the interview described here, please correct me if you mean something else: https://youtu.be/s71nJQqzYRQ?t=3110 To me, Lex Luthor repeatedly referring to AWS in this segment tells me that he's thinking about data centres rather than personal computing. Amazon has consumer facing cloud products like Luna that could have been name dropped. Thats why the brewery metaphor gets so much attention. Every ChatGPT wrapper running their own data centre actually is turbo unsustainable! I could see Amazon selling people on a subscription to a traditional laptop or desktop. We already have seen that with companies with Corsair and HP. But to me, the number of articles I see misinterpreting this interview screams of a propaganda campaign to make subscription hardware seem reasonable.

@DiogoConstantino@masto.pt @mttaggart@infosec.exchange I welcome the difference in opinion on the future of computing, but there's little evidence that cloud-only hardware is the direction we're headed in right now. There's especially no evidence in the short term. Subscription-based hardware should be the point of concern as it still erodes the consumers right to ownership, and it's already happening. Heck, PlayStation UK just announced an official avenue for leasing the PS5 three days ago. Every mainstream news outlet focusing on the idea of cloud-only computing only makes subscription-based hardware seem relatively reasonable. Also, treating this idea as a reality also takes away from conversations about the very real, concrete problems with AI. We're implying that the trillions of dollars being spent on creating a machine to replace workers is actually for a different (and I would argue less evil) purpose.

@wordstitcher@thecanadian.social @mgeist@mas.to I'd rather have the option to use privacy-respecting services wherever I can., because privacy isn't a zero-sum game. If C-22 passes, privacy-respecting tools with significant userbases like Signal will have to comply by adding backdoors, or stopping service altogether.

@wordstitcher@thecanadian.social @mgeist@mas.to I believe Signal doesn't have any backdoors because I've read their source code myself. If I (who is not experienced), and thousands of independent security specialists (who are experienced), missed something at https://github.com/orgs/signalapp/repositories?type=all , I would love to hear about it, genuinely. I'd also love to hear about something I missed while skimming https://signal.org/bigbrother/ . This is where they keep a record of any time a court of law forces them to hand over the user data they keep for specific phone numbers related to a given case. It's typically date of account creation, and the last date of access. You're right about one thing. Promises about security don't mean anything. What Signal actually promises is transparency. If they're bought out, we'll know because it's a nonprofit and they're required to make their financed public. If they go bankrupt, we'll need another option. Preferably without a legally mandated backdoor from C-22.
