Prompt injection really can’t be plugged when English is the surface area. Everyone trying support bots so I tried one too. It works 🤪

Pondering things after this whole Claude Code source business

I think the problem with the #GenAI for #SoftwareEngineering code production is we have decided that non-functional requirements are now just nice to have. In other words, if the code "works" than that's it, it's good enough.

For end users that won't be enough. In fact that is just be the entry point. For devs over time that's also a rubbish thought unless you just think you re-gen the code aka disposable code is now all code.

Got to enjoy being accused of using AI to produce slop. Well I’ll have you know that was 100% human made slop written the old fashioned way.

A few interpretations here
1. ai is clearly a put down which means it is likely not going broadly succeed if this current form doesn’t improve
2. My writing was not great
3. Informational trust is really in trouble

The reality is likely why not all three?

XHTML makes more sense now that we are doing probabilistic coding via GenAI markup generation. Humans bristled with strictness and I get why we went html5 but conditions because of GenAI have changed. Same for semantic html.

soup is more of an anti-pattern than ever! Funny how things work.

It's so "fun" use GenAI for coding sometimes. "Oh wait that isn't it. Oh let me do this thing (did it already 3 times). Oh you're right I already did that. Oh the user is saying to do this (proceeds to do something different)"

Yes you CAN be quite productive with it and you can also get into a flipping doom loop just like a real programmer except worse because it doesn't take showers or walks and then figure things out.

Contract-driven programming would be great with LLMs if they didn't just break contracts or "forget" that contracts exist. Tried deterministic guards, small context, etc., always the same result ~80% max & ~50-60% w/o guards. We verified with a reduced case with a web component ZingGrid with a strict schema, markdown docs, contract, hooks, and a huge unit tests. - same max ~8/10. This is the inherent non-deterministic wall.

TL;DR Useful now sure, but not magic.

Why does Star Trek: Starfleet Academy gotta go and actually be good? This last episode drops and I am completely floored. What the heck just happened !?! Paul Giamatti just shifted into 4th gear.

GenAI is awful like plastic bottles with filtered water is. If you can pause for a second that idea is ludicrous esp considering we have potable water, but yet many of us consume literal pallets of that stuff.

GenAI like filtered bottled water is quite convenient, but also utterly destructive & usually more expensive than traditional approaches, but forget all that …. It’s convenient. I don’t see a garbage patch in ocean just like I don’t see an endless server farm burning huge energy.

The Moltbook story so far has peak NFT/Web3 vibes. It hyped fast but turns out to be as stupid & bad as you’d imagine. Yet like the NFT story the true believers are all “you don’t get it! This is the future” despite literally pwning their systems & burning 💰.

The way they post about the issue then and now it is like these #AI super fans had their brains & critical thinking rug pulled. Only upside is their new Mac Minis can be used for many useful things of/when their fever breaks.

@mmasnick @nilay_patel The full interview transcript reads like a light weight grifter tech bro who has no business in the role he is in. Yes indeed very bad ethics, but also if this interview is indicative he is completely out of his depth.

Today I needed to work on a topic and hit a site with legit pay for content. Asked a friendly LLM about it just to see what it would do and it correctly told me that it was paid for and then proceeded to give me the content anyway in another “summary”form that was in fact pretty much just the content. Sigh. 😮‍💨

Sadly he won’t outwardly won’t care shame as the orange apex social predator teaches the youth going for money or power that shame is weakness. This kid already demonstrated it. The question is will his investors care or will they double down ?

As a SWE Prof who builds software for a living outside of school my frequent statement now for decades that

successful software >>> working code

is getting more acceptance from CS students all due to GenAI. Thanks I guess ?

I think the saving grace of Mastodon over Bluesky is the folks here are either plain old, appropriately salty or just natural free thinkers of absolutely any age that even when something is obvious for “reasonable folks” think you still get that “well actually…” as annoying as that can be it is also acts like a group think and idiocy immune system.
