Profile picture and banner: I am wearing a Pop!_OS shirt with multiple computers running Pop!_OS in the background to celebrate the 20.04 release.
After Gitlab's recent announcement I am strongly considering migrating Redox OS to Forgejo, a truly open source community maintained project.
LLM slop is just one part of the broader systemd/Linux sloperating system.
There has never been a time in my life when I have been less enthused to be a programmer than now.
Why even have user accounts if one missing if statement in a multi-million line kernel gives everyone root
I understand everyone is under pressure, and I wish you all the best. Especially if we disagree on things, I am often wrong.
I feel that everything I had hoped to gain from writing FLOSS is slowly but surely eroding. My freedom and joy are being soaked up by intense pressures, both internal to FLOSS and external.
Software will get worse before it gets better. Burnout could push maintainers to lower their standards and embrace "AI". Hardware will continue to complexify.
Where does this end?
Redox OS has added a Certificate of Origin policy and a strict no-LLM policy to our CONTRIBUTING.md: https://gitlab.redox-os.org/redox-os/redox/-/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md
After a few nights of reading through thousands of pages of PRMs I have finally implemented a modesetting driver for Intel HD graphics on Redox OS: https://gitlab.redox-os.org/redox-os/base/-/merge_requests/46/. There is much more to do, but there is now a clear path to native hardware accelerated graphics!
US courts consider code to be fully written by an LLM with limited human interaction to be public domain: https://media.cadc.uscourts.gov/opinions/docs/2025/03/23-5233.pdf. Public domain is NOT open source as defined by the OSI: https://opensource.org/blog/public-domain-is-not-open-source. Nor is it free software as defined by the FSF or GNU: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/categories.html. Accepting these works could make software licenses unenforceable in the US, regardless if they are FLOSS or not.
I am in the incredibly privileged position to say no to LLM use in my projects. I have heard from many people who are being forced to use LLMs for their programming jobs regardless if they want to or if they are well suited to the task.
SAG-AFTRA and WGA were able to fight this for other disciplines, it is quite a coincidence (ironic?) that software developers are both responsible for and suffering from widespread LLM deployment

cosmic-text 0.19.0 has been released: https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-text/releases/tag/0.19.0
htop has been ported to Redox OS! I'm using it to identify performance bottlenecks.
The Redox OS February report is out!
This month was very exciting as always: COSMIC Compositor, COSMIC Settings, NodeJS, Vulkan, Complete POSIX Signals, Fixed Nushell and Helix, More Boot Fixes, Better Multi-threading, Better Package Manager, Orbital Performance Monitor and many more.
I have ported X11 to Redox OS in order to start working on ports that have previously been too difficult. In the future, we will be rebuilding these with wayland. Here is TWM with gtk3-demo open on the left, the embedded GL example on the right, and xterm behind. This all runs inside orbital using a custom X server video driver.
Did you know that if you try to type SHA256SUMS on a mobile keyboard but hit the numbers too fast it is SHAWTYSUMS
