@Craigp using gimp is in itself an act of masochism so dark i wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, so maybe that is more of an issue than the naming scheme …

@marick@mstdn.social I am of two minds here as well honestly. I suppose I have to begrudgingly admit that wearing a cone on your hat these days is not enough to get the government to send the goons out with clubs or guns. The counter factual there being wearing that wearing an inflatable dinosaur outfit seems to be enough to get ICE hit squads to be sent after you, so perhaps being distinctly unserious is still or yet again a very valid approach to protest.

@marick@mstdn.social I wasn’t really thinking of in group / out group when I wrote my snarky post. That’s a valid / valuable distinction. In retrospect I suppose my point was more that 1 - not all protest needs to immediately cause large, structural social or mindset changes 2 - having fun is a legitimate and effective activity because Terrible People tend to be distinctly Not Fun 3 - I get a little annoyed by cynical responses to idealistic but well meant but not counter productive efforts to protest because if it’s not detrimental to whatever cause it is we’re supporting I think we need to be nice about it 3a) partially because maybe their in group is different than mine or yours

@marick@mstdn.social I suppose in your example that is entirely true - although, perhaps the normies were in fact less shocked than assumed by what I now presume to be cyborg-like outfits. In my youthful skater days I figured myself a very rebellious spirit , only to later learn that plenty of “normies” had had far more exhilarating lifes long before I had been born, or were simply not at all impressed with rebellion or Sick Ollies. This to say that I think you are at least partially correct.

@evacide@hachyderm.io the coherent Taoist hermit approach might be to live in a grotto on a mountain, doomscrolling meditatively whilst waiting passively for the sea to come swallow us and our devices eventually, inevitably. No chucking required. Bad reception though, perhaps, in that cave, in the meantime.

RE: @AlisonCreekside@mstdn.ca

Watch the Dutch government offer "political but not military" support again. Then we find out we actually did send troops years later and the fucker responsible gets elected nato chief again and we all pretend like that never happened.

@SecurityWriter@infosec.exchange the depressing reality so far is that such protests do not seem to work once the state has been entirely disconnected from democratic feedback loops.
Also see Georgia.

Today i sat in a meeting with quite senior manager types wherein, after talking about quite useful stuff for an hour and making some relevant proposals, they, instead of making actual decisions reflecting their opinions, let an llm generate a slide deck summary of their meeting that did not reflect what was said by anybody and wasn’t even in the slightest about the subject at hand.

It all felt very absurd and postmodern and quite like a stage play or some kind of performance art.

If a management team meets in the woods and there’s nobody to hear it kinda vibes.

What was this meeting about?
By the end I really couldn’t tell anymore. I think I still can’t.

RE: https://mstdn.social/@marick/116994522621912706 One can argue endlessly about the efficiency of situationist protest, but not everybody needs to fire bomb the modern equivalent of garment factories, you know. Fun is fun, which is a success in itself, and it honestly seems like a decently productive means of protest, this carnivalesque Happening.

“It’s Fourth of July weekend in New York City, and the brutal temperatures haven’t stopped a hundred-or-so people from donning pointy hats and dancing in the streets while chanting anti-Big Tech slogans. “Fuck, fuck, fuck AI,” the Luddite gnomes – people in colorful, pointy homemade hats – chant as we march.” https://www.404media.co/luddite-events-nyc-off-tech-summer-of-ludd/ I would like to suggest that this behavior will be less effective than the real Luddites were. The state will not need to crush this movement.

Unless hugging face sues OpenAI , or some convincingly detailed post mortem is published by them, I stand by my initial gut feeling that they are both in on it and nothing happened.

@SecureOwl@infosec.exchange I once was called by a repairman four years after asking a land lord to fix the heater and having moved by then. He “happened to be in the neighborhood “ and saw my support request, which , we deduced together, had by then trickled down from the land lords outsourced support web portal to the outsourced support intermediary, to the separately outsourced heater installation company, which sent it to the outsourced heater repair contract intermediary middle man, who after consulting the legal team of the land lord, sent it to an actual independent repair company which finally outsourced the work to freelance heater repairmen working ob an underpaid hourly basis.

@marick@mstdn.social I really like this thought. Who the hell dons an inflatable suit for fun!? It has a sad theme park underpaid summer job connotation or something.
