NixOS users - if you want to make native-feeling webapps for custom sites, you might like this Nix module which is the result of many swear words (mostly figuring out how to get icons working nicely): https://gist.github.com/stefan-burke/da193da7e11a887b13feecb0987463e6
You'll define your list of web apps at the top, add icons to the same dir, rebuild, and boom - you'll see a "Mastodon" or "Github" or whatever icon in your applications menu, and clicking it will open Chromium in app mode, with its own isolated profile, and the icon you've set, all pretty like

mind blown by NixOS again - running `nixos-rebuild build-vm` makes a virtual machine clone of your computer from its config - or any other NixOS config file. and then it prints the instructions to boot from it, and a few seconds later you're logged into a mini-me version of your PC, whoa
lately I've been thinking I want to replace my crufty Ubuntu home server with NixOS, and this will let me stage a new setup easily in a VM

#NixOS never fails to impress me
The latest update updates KDE Plasma to version 6, which natively supports HDR, but I've been happily using Gnome
I changed three lines of my config (one to disable Gnome, two to enable KDE), and then ran two commands - one to update to the newest channel, and another to rebuild. Restarted, and now I'm in Plasma 6 with full HDR, no bugs, no crashes, easy peasy!
The up-front investment of setting up your config pays off so nicely. Give NixOS a bash!

Nix/OS keeps impressing me - TIL that you can write a script in arbitrary languages and then add a nix-shell shebang to set up the environment using the standard Nix repo biz

Great to see a comprehensive study of actual UK diets prove so conclusively what veegs have always argued.
Some key points -
- "plant diets lead to 75% less climate-heating emissions, water pollution and land use than meat-rich ones"
- "what was eaten was far more important [...] than where and how it was produced"
- "the biggest difference seen in the study was for emissions of methane [...] which were 93% lower for vegan diets compared with high-meat diets"

I just used ChatGPT to write a scraper for Ultimate-Guitar.com which downloads the tabs (from their obfuscated code) and formats them to .md files
it took a lot of coaxing but it was still less frustrating than writing it myself
once they're more capable of understanding context I can see AI being a really useful tool for developers

I watched North West Today and they had a piece about how Greater Manchester Police are asking people with video doorbell cameras to give the police 24/7 access to their streams
the copper they interviewed said it was brilliant cuz they wouldn't have to knock on your door at 3am to get the footage
in exchange, the police get a full log of every person that visits or walks past my house, and every car that drives past, to use however they feel, with no consent
